After finishing an unthinkable 163rd at yesterday's NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind., Jenny Barringer was still looking answers.  The University of Colorado senior, the pre-race favorite for victory, collapsed in the 4th kilometer while leading the race with Florida State's Susan Kuijken.

"I definitely remember her (Kuijken) on my shoulder and then all of a sudden going light-headed and thinking 'I don't know how to run anymore,'" Barringer told CuBuffs.com.  "I just lost my head and didn't feel good and then next thing I knew I was on the ground thinking, 'Is this really happening to me?  Is this a race?'  I think I was just a little delirious."

Barringer, 23, finished fifth in last summer's IAAF World Championships in the 3000m steeplechase, setting an American record of 9:12.50.  That performance capped a terrific 2009 season where she also ran 3:59.90 for 1500m and won both the NCAA and USA open steeplechase titles.  Barringer had agreed to stay at Colorado for the 2009 fall cross country season so she could help her teammates win a national title.  Although they only finished 20th with 458 points, Barringer was proud that she finished the race in support of the team.

"I found my way through though," she continued, "and I remember thinking that I was going to score for the team.  That is what I came here to do.  I tried to fight to keep my mind awake and fight for the best place that I could.  I really believe that my character spoke today by finishing."

It is no secret that Barringer is the most sought after NCAA distance runner by both shoe companies and athlete agents, alike.  Now that her NCAA eligibility is exhausted, the sport's observers are waiting to see with whom --and where-- she ends up.  Top steeplechasers are particularly valuable to shoe companies because they can compete on all three surfaces (track, road and cross country), indoors and outdoors, and can usually race successfully from 1500m to 10 km.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Senior Angela Bizzarri won the 2009 NCAA Cross Country national title on Monday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course, smashing her previous personal-best set at last year's NCAA Championships by 13 seconds and finishing the 6K race with a time of 19:46. This marks the second national title for Bizzarri in less than six months, after capturing the 5,000m title at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June. Bizzarri becomes the first Illinois women's cross country runner to ever win the NCAA cross country title, and the first Illini cross country champion since Craig Virgin took home the title in 1975.

"This was my last cross country race, and it was a perfect way to end it," Bizzarri said. "I didn't want to start out the race too fast because I prefer going out more even. But I still wanted to keep in close contact with the lead group, and I felt like I did a good job with that. Eventually with the last two or three kilometers, the front of the pack started coming back to me and I was able to capitalize on that, which worked out to my advantage. It was a great race, and I am so excited."

Colorado senior Jenny Barringer was favored to win the race and was neck and neck with Florida State senior Susan Kuijken after two kilometers. The two were far ahead of the rest of the pack and had a five second lead on Bizzarri. After four kilometers, Kuijken had an impressive 13-second lead over Bizzarri, Washington sophomore Kendra Schaaf and Villanova sophomore Sheila Reid. Favorite Barringer had faded from the front of the pack by this time after collapsing midway through the race and ended up placing 163rd.

Making the final turn with about 500 meters remaining, Bizzarri and Schaaf went by Kuijken and began the long sprint home. With 100 meters left to go, Bizzarri used her signature kick to surpass Schaaf and capture the victory.

Women's Cross Country Wins 8th National Title

 

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- As all five Villanova scorers crossed the finish line to earn All-American status, the Villanova women's cross country squad dominated the NCAA Championships and claimed the 2009 NCAA title. The Wildcats cruised to victory earning 86 team points, while Florida State, who was the runner-up, posted 133 points.

 

This is the eighth title for Villanova cross country and the school's 17th championship overall. It was the first title for head coach Gina Procaccio, who was an assistant coach in 1998, when the women's team last won a title.

 

"The girls ran phenomenal," Procaccio said. "It has been an amazing season and all seven ran so well today. We continued to execute every race and stayed in the front pack the whole time."

 

The Wildcats continued to dominate right out of the starting line as they had all season with all top five runners staying in the lead pack throughout the course. JuniorAmanda Marino crossed the finish line of the 6K first for the squad in sixth place clocking in at 20:02.4.

 

Classmate Sheila Reid powered through after faltering at the 4K mark with a cramp and clocked in at 20:16.3 for 13th place.

 

Sophomore Bogdana Mimic was the third Villanova runner as she finished in 20:26.6 and earned 22nd place, while junior Ali Smith was 24th and clocked in at 20:33.1.

 

Senior Nicole Schappert was the fifth scorer for the Wildcats and finished 26th in 20:38.1.

 

Marino, Reid, Mimic, Smith and Schappert each earned All-American honors.

 

Freshman Brooke Simpson ran the course in 21:01.5 and was 60th as senior Kaitlyn Tallman crossed the finish line in 21:16.6 and was 98th.

 

All five of the Villanova scorers crossed the finish line before the third through fifth runners of Florida State, helping the `Cats to realize they had claimed a title.

 

"I knew we had a lead out there," Procaccio said. "Around the 3K mark I realized that our runners were in front, but I didn't truly realize that we had won until the end as I counted our first five runners cross the finish line."

Men Run to Second at NCAA Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Men of Oregon placed four runners in the top 31 to rally for a runner-up finish at the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course.

For the Ducks, who entered the race as the two-time defending NCAA champions, but only ranked eighth in the national polls, Monday’s race marked the school’s third straight NCAA trophy. That’s Oregon’s best stretch at the NCAA Championships since finishing in the top two for four consecutive years between 1976-79.

The Oregon women finished ninth.

“Our men just ran a terrific race,” said Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna. “It’s always a good accomplishment when you can leave these championships with a trophy.

“It was a disappointing day for our women, but when you consider that neither program was even at this meet four years ago, to finish second and ninth isn’t too bad.”

Sophomore Luke Puskedra led the men with a 21st-place finish in 30:01.9. Junior Matthew Centrowitz ran 27th in 30:09.5, senior Kenny Klotz was 29th in 30:13.9 and junior Danny Mercado was 29th in 30:15.4.

“We knew what we were capable of doing,” said Mercado. “We just wanted to go out and prove that we’re a good team.”

Senior Diego Mercado’s 61st-place showing in 30:34.4 rounded out the scoring for the Ducks, who finished just 16 points behind No. 2 Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys won with 127 points, followed by Oregon with 143 points. No. 3 Alabama was third with 173 points, followed by No. 13 Northern Arizona (190) and No. 7 William & Mary (226). Top-ranked Stanford ended up 10th with 354 points.

Liberty’s Sam Chelanga, runner-up to Galen Rupp a year ago, won the individual title in a course-record 28:41.3.

Oregon steadily worked its way up the scoreboard. On the first loop, Puskedra opened the race near the lead pack, with Klotz about 40th and Centrowitz and the Mercado twins in the middle of the field.

The Ducks made their move just before the midpoint, with Puskedra near the top 10 and Klotz, Danny Mercado and Centrowitz climbing into the top 40.

With 2,000 meters remaining, Puskedra was 20th, with Centrowitz, Klotz and Danny Mercado all around 25th, before the four Oregon runners finished within :14 of each other.

It was the best career NCAA finish for Centrowitz, Klotz and Danny Mercado, who joined Puskedra in earning All-America honors.

“It felt good to go out and run like we know we can,” said Centrowitz. “The way we were racing lately really didn’t represent Oregon the way we wanted to.”

The Duck women were led by Jordan Hasay’s 18th-place finish in 20:23.1. The freshman from Arroyo Grande, Calif., won the first All-America award of her young career.

“The pace went out really quick,” said Hasay. “The last kilometer, I just tried to be tough. I wanted to finish in the top 10, but I can’t be too disappointed.”

No. 2 Villanova won the race with 86 points, with No. 8 Florida State taking second with 133 points. Top-ranked Washington was third with 188 points, followed by No. 9 Texas Tech (191) and No. 3 Princeton (251).

Angela Bizzarri of Illinois was the individual winner in 19:46.8.

In addition to Hasay, the Ducks, who had five of seven runners making their NCAA Championships debuts, counted a 48th-place finish from senior Nicole Blood (20:54.6), an 81st-place finish from junior Alexandra Kosinski (21:10.5), an 87th-place finish from sophomore Claire Michel (21:12.6) and a 103rd-place showing from senior Lauren Zaludek (21:19.2) for their 276 total.

“Sometimes you have these days,” said Blood. “We have a great group of women and we know we’re better than that.”
