Just like it did four years ago, Ventura High has caught the boys’ cross country postseason by surprise.

Not listed among the top Division II programs all season, Ventura placed second in its heat Saturday at the CIF-Southern Section Prelims at Mount San Antonio College.

Using a familiar formula, Ventura’s top five runners were separated by only 34 seconds. Easton Tacket and Doug Petrie were eighth and ninth, respectively, in the Division II heat. In 2006, unranked Ventura was the Division II section and state runner-up.

Ventura was one of 14 area teams to qualify for the Nov. 21 CIF Divisional Finals on the same course.

It was a day of strong team and individual performers for Ventura County. Three teams and four individuals were heat winners.

Ranked No. 1 in the nation by The Harrier magazine, Royal put on a command performance.

Four runners placed in the top 10 in the heat and all seven were within a 49-second time gap. Korey Yoakum (15 minutes, 23 seconds) and Travis Edwards (15:30) were third and fourth. Sean Davidson (15:33) placed sixth and Paul Jesson (15:35) finished ninth.

Led by defending Division III girls’ individual champion Melissa Skiba, Oak Park won its heat handily.

Skiba won with a time of 17:49. Kaycee Holcomb was fourth (18:30). Also placing in the top 20 in the heat were: Taelor Young, 11th, 19:10; Jessica Reints, 12th, 19:11; and Brittany Stalzer, 16th, 19:24.

Defending state champion La Reina and Oaks Christian were first and third in the same Division IV girls’ race.

La Reina packed four runners in the top 11. Rachel Brajkovich (18:32) and Sarah Pearson (18:51) were first and third for the Regents. Katie Kavetsky (20:04) was ninth.

Leading Oaks Christian was Fallon Cislo, who placed fifth in 19:21. Christina Garcia (20:23) was 13th.

Although Frontier League champion Nordhoff did not qualify, senior Catherine Hasbrouck made the finals after placing second in her heat in 18:45.

Not advancing out of the Division III girls’ prelim was Agoura, which was eighth. Sara DeLuca (19:29) and Jana Peale (19:44) were 20th and 28th.

Condor League champion Thacher was second in its Division I boys’ heat behind Woodcrest Christian.

Will Callan (16:00) and Joel Reimer (16:24) were first and third for the Toads. All five Thacher runners placed in the top 25.

In Division I girls, Simi Valley survived with a fourth-place finish in its heat. Liberty Miller was the individual winner in 17:21. Alexis Miller was 18th in 19:15. Competing in the same race as an individual, Oxnard’s Sydney Caldwell was 11th in 18:57.

Westlake and Newbury Park advanced in the same Division II boys’ heat with Ventura. Sam DeMello (16:01) and Jonathan Miller (16:02) were 12th and 14th. Westlake had a 28-second time gap. For Newbury Park, Sean Grumney (15:38) was second and Talmage Jones (15:48) was seventh.

Camarillo was the runner-up in the last Division II boys’ heat as Heyden Wooff placed first as an individual in 15:16. Erik Pinuelas was fifth in 15:53.

Defending Division II boys’ champion Thousand Oaks missed qualifying by 19 points. The Lancers were fifth in their heat. Kevin Joerger advances as an individual after posting one of the best times (15:19) of the day. Rio Mesa was out of the money after placing 10th in its heat.

Royal did not qualify after finishing sixth in its Division I heat. Kelly Upson (18:25) and Sophie Mateu (18:46) were fifth and 12th.

Simi Valley and Oxnard did not qualify in their Division I boys’ heats. David Nelson (15:50) and Michael Vorgitch (15:51) was 17th and 18th for Simi Valley, while Gustavo Mena was 48th (16:40).

In Division III boys, Oak Park did not advance after placing seventh. Blake Minasian was 20th in 16:23.

Qualifying in Division IV boys was Oaks Christian, which finished sixth. Vincent Colarossi (16:52) and Ryan Huning (16:55) were 14th and 18th. Nordhoff was one place away from qualifying. Matt Russell was 25th in 17:05. St. Bonaventure and Fillmore were ninth and 11th in their heat.

Westlake, Thousand Oaks and Ventura qualified for the Division II girls’ final.

Westlake qualified fourth in its heat. Nicki Ghazarian (18:42) and Rachel Smiley (19:22) were eighth and 15th. In the final heat, Thousand Oaks and Ventura were third and fourth, respectively. Kalin Padberg (19:14) and Caitlin Turner (19:15) were 18th and 19th. Ventura’s Hannah Kirkegaard was third in 18:08.

Pacific View League rivals Camarillo and Rio Mesa did not advance after being seventh and 10th, respectively. Freshman Aliya Shah was seventh in 18:33, but it wasn’t enough to help Buena, which did not qualify.

WALNUT - If none of the members of the Simi Valley girls' cross-country team continue their running careers beyond high school, they might want to think about joining the circus instead.

That's because for the second year in a row, the Pioneers perfected the art of tightrope walking when it comes to advancing in the postseason.

Although senior Liberty Miller ran the fastest girls' time of the day at the Southern Section prelims at Mt. San Antonio College - clocking 17 minutes, 21 seconds on the 2.9-mile course - it was anything but easy Saturday for Simi Valley.

The Pioneers, competing without Karla Vernola (injured left leg), secured the fourth and final qualifying berth in their heat with 126 points, making them the lone area team to reach the Nov. 21 Div. I final.

"After the race, everything just fell apart. At first, I thought we didn't make it and I started to cry because I thought it was going to be the last race with my team," Miller said. "They deserve to be there and I didn't want to think what it would be like next week without them there. It was meant to be. They were meant to persevere and be given another chance."

The same couldn't be said for the Crescenta Valley of LaCrescenta girls in Div. I, the Canyon girls in Div. II and the Thousand Oaks boys in Div. II, all of which finished fifth in their qualifying heats to miss advancing by one spot.

In addition to the Simi Valley girls, there were several other close calls for local teams, including the Westlake girls, who finished fourth in their Div. II qualifying heat with 114 points to edge South Torrance (121).

Thousand Oaks, which took third in the final Div. II girls' heat, recorded 118 points to hold off Ventura (123) and Edison of Huntington Beach (124).

Newbury Park and Saugus were both fourth in their respective Div. II boys' heats to complete the 16-team finals field.

Viewpoint of Calabasas got in as the top sixth-place boys' team in Div. V, along with securing the eighth and final girls' qualifying berth in its heat.

Harvard-Westlake of Studio City didn't endure similar nerve-racking moments as Viewpoint, winning both its boys' and girls' heats in Div. IV.

The Wolverines, led by Cami Chapus (18:25) and Amy Weissenbach (18:49) taking first and third, posted the fastest girls' team time in the division (98:01). Harvard-Westlake also produced the top boys' time (83:01) in the division.

The Royal of Simi Valley boys had their top four - Korey Yoakum (15:30), Travis Edwards (15:32), Sean Davidson (15:33) and Paul Jesson (15:35) - finish in the top nine to win the heat with 42 points.

Saugus relied on a 1-2 finish from Kaylin Mahoney (17:55) and Danielle Hernando (18:08) to win its Div. II heat with 33 points, despite resting four varsity runners.

Golden Valley captured its Div. III boys' heat with 32 points, with Seth Totten's second-place finish (15:16) leading five Grizzlies in the top 11.

Melissa Skiba (17:49) and Kaycee Holcomb (18:30) were first and fourth for the Oak Park girls, who won their Div.III heat with 41 points.

Rachel Brajkovich (18:32) and Sarah Pearson (18:51) placed first and third for LaReina of Thousand Oaks in its Div. IV win with 53 points.

Camarillo's Heyden Wooff won his Div. II boys' heat in 15:16, leading the second-place Scorpions (83 points). Canyon and Westlake both took third in their Div. II boys' heats.

Ashley Welker and Bailey Miller both ran 18:18, helping West Ranch take second in its Div. II heat with 99 points.

Liberty Miller signed off her Marmonte League career with double exclamation points on Thursday afternoon.

Simi Valley High’s stalwart senior smashed a meet record with a sizzling time of 17 minutes, 17.97 seconds and the Pioneers girls’ squad won its elusive first league championship by placing five runners in the top 13 at the Marmonte League cross country championships at Agoura High.

Miller’s mark topped the previous record set by her mentor and former teammate Anna Sperry, who clocked a 17:23 in 2006.

The team title was the first for a program that twice before carried undefeated league records into the league finals and six times has finished as the Marmonte League runner-up. Miller was motivated for both achievements, but said the team goal spurred some pre-race tension.

“I really wanted us to win, because it seems like we’ve been chasing the league championship for so long,” Miller said. “We were disappointed that we didn’t win at the county championships (last week), and I think a lot of people thought we were going to lose the league title again. We didn’t want to let that happen.”

Alexis Miller and Nicole Rietveld ran 6-7 for the Pioneers, who finished with 38 points. Second-place Westlake totaled 71.

Just as the Simi Valley girls ran to form, the boys’ favorite also squashed any upset bids. With Travis Edwards winning his first individual league championship, powerhouse Royal placed four runners in the top six and all five in the top 10 to reclaim the league championship.

Edwards sped home in 14:57.19, just five seconds off the meet record.

Royal, ranked No. 1 in the nation by The Harrier magazine, finished with 25 points to easily outpoint second-place Westlake (75 points).

Royal’s string of eight consecutive league titles was snapped a year ago by Thousand Oaks. This time, there was no stopping the Highlanders.

“We wanted to kill it today,” said Edwards. “It’s a great league with a lot of competition, but we wanted to show what kind of team we have.”

In the girls’ race, Miller showed off the form that has left her unbeaten by any runner in the CIF-Southern Section this season. Only three runners have finished in front of her this year and they hail from Texas and the CIF-San Diego Section.

In winning her third successive league championship, Liberty Miller was nearly 50 seconds faster than second-place Kelly Upson. The Royal junior crossed the finish line in 18:04.28. A year ago, Miller won the league title in 18:17.35.

Rounding out the top five were Westlake’s Nicki Ghazarian (18:11.80), Newbury Park’s Rachel Ranucci (18:46.25) and Thousand Oaks’ Caitlin Turner (18:47.02).

By running 6-7, Simi Valley’s Alexis Miller (18:48.45) and Rietveld (18:48.85) all but assured the team title.

“This team has worked so hard to achieve this,” said Simi Valley coach Roger Evans. “We certainly felt we had the talent to get it done. It was just a matter of performing to our expectations, and the girls did that today.”

Taking third in the team competition was Thousand Oaks (73 points), while Royal was fourth with 83 points. All four teams earn automatic berths in CIF-SS competition.

In the boys’ race, Edwards held off a challenge from second-place Kevin Joerger of Thousand Oaks by breaking away in the final mile. Joerger finished in 15:13.10.

“It’s awesome,” Edwards said of his first-place finish. “It was definitely a challenge because (Joerger) was there a lot longer than I expected. It just shows the talent that we have in this league.”

Said Joerger: “I was going to go for it and stay with him as long as I could. (Edwards) is such a strong runner, that he got away in the final mile. It’s definitely a good feeling to finish second, considering how strong this league is. We all push each other.”

Royal showed off its prowess with Sean Davidson placing third (15:21.65), Paul Jesson taking fifth (15:27.18) and Korey Yoakum placing sixth (15:28.80).

Sean Grumney of Newbury Park was fourth in 15:22.23. In the team competition, Royal and Westlake was followed by Thousand Oaks (95) and Simi Valley (101) in the top four.

Last year's graduate ran at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas at the Tiger Cross Country Open. Coming in with his best performance to date he raced to ninth place overall and forth for his strong team. Lead by his front-running teammate, Ben Zywicki (first overall in 24:18), Sean ran 25:06 over the 8K course. Sean will no doubt be a key component on his team this season, especially on October twenty-fourth, where he will race in his conference championships.

     Asher Lober ran in the prestigious New England Championships in Manchester, Connecticut. Asher ran 7th for his sub-varsity squad coming in 115th overall. He covered the 8K course in a time of 27:58.

     On October 17th I took a change of pace (literally) and ran in my first half-marathon, at the Humboldt, Avenue of the Giants, redwood marathon. I came in 30th overall and 6th for my team, covering the flat road course in a time of 1:18:57.

     Evan Hillman ran in the Western Regional Preview meet hosted by Pomona Pitzer in Claremont on October third (sorry for the omission). He came in 79th overall and 8th on his team, covering the 8K course in a time of 29:24. 

     Allie Lopez ran at the Cal Poly SLO invite on October 17th. Lead by star teammate, Shannon Murakami, who won the race, Allie finished the 5K course in a time of 20:48, coming in 34th place overall and seventh for her team.

     Nina Su ran on October Tenth in her own UCSD Triton XC Classic. Nina finished the 6K course in a time of 24:08 to come in 36th place overall and 6th on her team.

Andrew Snyder, racing for UCI, ran a time of 27:30 at the western regional preview meet in Claremont. Allie Lopez copmeted for UCLA at the Notre Dame invitational against some of the top teams in the nation including number one ranked University of Washington. She ran a time of 19:37. I competed for the River City Rebels track club in San Francisco running a time of 21:03 on a very hilly 3.55 mile course.

Sorry for being breif, hope to get back on top of things next week. I'm in the middle of midterms...

The only two alumni to race was Nina Su and I. Nina took on a difficult field in the University of Southern Indiana Pre-National Invitational. Considering this was her first race back from a nasty stress fracture, Nina did a great job coming in 37th place with a time of 24:37 over the 6k distance.

I traveled down to the bay area yet again to compete for the club team: The River City Rebels in Hayward. It was the hardest, hilliest course I have ever run, and came in 5th for my team over the 3.15 mile course with a time of 17:46. Ouch!

]]> Wed, 30 Sep 2009 23:17:51 +0000 Blog - Alumni Race Recap: Weekend of 9/19                On the weekend of September 19th Humboldt state University hosted their first ever home meet on the conference course in McKinnelyville, CA. The golf course held numerous small, rolling hills, and featured a "hell hill" going three fourths of a mile up. Southern Oregon University, a top ten nationally ranked NAIA school, took the win with the Humboldt Jacks coming in second. I ran 8th on my team with a time of 27:22. Maybe going out in 5:05 wasn't such a good idea with the hell hill remaining in the third mile.

                On the same day, in Riverside, CA, UC Riverside hosted a premier invitational with two of our alumni competing amongst the best. On this hot, dusty, but flat-fast course, Axel Ambriz raced unattached yet again. Axel ran an impressive time of 26:20 for a deep 111th place. Coming in 311th place, Evan Hillman ran a time of 30:38 for his team, Occidental.

                Asher Lober ran in his second collegiate race at the University of Massachusetts invitational in Amherst, MA. Coming in sixth for his team with a place of 27th overall, Asher ran impressively to finish two spots ahead (on his team), from where he finished last weekend. Asher ran a time of 26:55. Also racing in only his second collegiate race, Sean Guildea traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete at the Woody Geeno Invitational. Sean ran a great time of 25:45 to come in 5th on his team and 16th overall. Keep an eye on these two, they seem to be moving up nicely in the college ranks!

                Allie Lopez raced in her first college cross country race over this past weekend in Tuscan, Arizona for the UCLA Bruins. Competing against her friend from Simi Valley, Anna Sperry (who won), Allie didn't do too bad herself finishing in 32nd place overall and 7th on her team. Allie ran a time of 18:44 over the 5k course.

                I heard that Thousand Oaks HS had an awesome showing at the Oak Park invitational on both the girls and guys teams. It seems that a full summer of fun and training is paying off well for both the high school and alumni. Great Job to everyone who competed, and I hope everybody had as much fun being warriors out on the course as I did!

]]> Tue, 22 Sep 2009 03:14:30 +0000 Blog - Alumni Race Recap: Weekend of 9/12             A slew of past Lancer's ran this last weekend, many of who was their first college cross country competition. Five alumni raced in four different invitationals all over the state and one in the east. Newly Lancer-graduated runner, Asher Lober, competed for the University of Vermont at the Pre-America East Meet on Sunday. Asher was 8th man on his team finishing in 33rd place in a time of 27:22. Coming off of a busy summer this is not a bad result by any means. Being on the bubble of top 7, Asher will surely be pushed throughout the season in order to race for them come championship time.

     In perhaps the biggest invitational out of any alumni this past weekend, Andrew Snyder competed in his first college race for the UC Irvine Anteater's. Being more middle-distance oriented, Andrew found it tough adjusting to the college distance of 8k (5 miles), but did fine coming in 108th place with a time of 27:48 on a slow course. A pretty good result considering he has yet to start school and training with his team! As a team, the Anteater's finished fourth overall behind well known distance running powerhouses such as Chico State and Cal Poly SLO.

     Two alumni raced at the Redlands Cross Country Invitational at Sylvan Park. Axel Ambriz (graduate of 05'), running unattached, finished a fine 14th place in a time of 19:48 on a 6k course (5:19 pace). Competing in his first college race for Occidental, Evan Hillman traveled to Redlands as well to finish in a time of 22:25 finishing in 81st place.

     As for me, I traveled down to San Francisco to compete in only my second race since I graduated from Thousand Oaks in 2007. Running for a club team called The River City Rebels in The Golden Gate Park Open I finished the slow four mile course in a time of 21:51 to come in 28th place against a tough field featuring former California Prep star Philip Reid, who won in 20:05. I will be competing for this club team this season instead of for Humboldt State due to my eligibility, but I am still excited to be racing. I have the national club championships to look forward to in November, racing against some of the most premier runners in the nation on sub-elite teams.
