More than 10, 000 local runners along with a million other people from more than 30 countries around the globe participated in the world’s largest 1-day running event, the Nike+ Human Race 10K on October 24.

It’s only the second year that Nike has held this event and Singapore was once again the only country in Southeast Asia to be a part of this historic race. It’s no surprise actually, considering that Singapore was the first to fill its registration slots in a record 6 days.

This year’s run offered a unique race experience as the participants took off onto the track where, only recently, the top Formula 1 drivers were racing, with the tire marks still visible.

Early this morning at midnight, over 7,000 runners could be seen racing through the streets of Los Angeles as part of the 2nd annual Nike+ Human Race. Bringing over 140,000 participants worldwide in over 27 cities, the goal of the event was to celebrate runners and unite them globally in the earth’s largest one-day running event. In Los Angeles this meant starting and finishing at the Coliseum and running the 5 or 10K through the Figueroa Corridor and on streets just outside of the USC campus. One dollar of every entry fee was donated to USC Football Coach Pete Carroll’s philanthropy,A Better LA.

Along the way, music pumped up the athletes and projections on buildings of other Human Race events from cities like Seoul, Rome and New York motivated runners with themes of unity and inspiration. People emerged from their homes or sat in their windows to cheer as the joggers went by. Even the most jaded of security guards could be seen shooting photos with their cell phones and giving hi-fives to participants.

Many of the runners were trained using the Nike+ system and the company’s online coaching tools - a system which has gained an almost fanatic following with 2 million members worldwide.

Few people would compare the cities of Buenos Aires, Istanbul, London, Los Angeles, Rome and Taipei with Belding.

They will come Saturday.

Belding, with a population of 5,691, will join 24 cities worldwide as sites for the second annual 10K Nike+ Human Race.

The Belding event -- called the Nike+ Human Race at the Every Stride 5K/10K -- combines last year's Every Stride 5K/10K with the global Nike 10K run.

How this road run marriage came about was a combination of success at the 2008 Every Stride 5K/10K at Candlestone Golf and Resort and the date of Saturday's race.

"We expected to have a couple hundred runners last year," Every Stride race director Chris Nicholas said. "But it just blew up, and we wound up with about 750 runners for a first-year event that went very smoothly.

"Nike did their Human Race last year on Labor Day, liked the way it went and decided to move it to October this year on the same day as our two runs."

Nike also was looking to place one of its races in Michigan. So company officials placed a call to Gazelle Sports, which has been a longtime sponsor of local road runs, is a sponsor of the Every Stride and helped sponsor the inaugural Human Race.

Blog - My take on the Serena Williams "situation"

http://www.runnerspace.com/gprofile.php?mgroup_id=65&do=blogs&blog_id=1723

I just finished watching the video of Serena Williams' meltdown, and without question she was dead wrong. Now I've gotten that out of the way, I want to address what really disappoineted me, the comments that accompanied the video. I understand people have the right to say what they want, and they have every right to express their opinion. I dig that, I'm down with that, in fact, I welcome it. But what do they say when a baseball player loses his composure, and is throwing baseball bats, and bases, and is in the face of an umpire screaming? Does anyone call for that player's head? Are they suspended? Or worse, does anyone start throwing around words like "ghetto"? My point isn't to defend what she did, or who she is as a person, because I don't know her personally. My beef is this firestorm of judgement and condemnation that has followed. People are so quick to rush to judgmet, and so reluctant to practice forgiveness. While she hasn't apologized, I doubt it would do much good if she did. Outcasting others makes some people feel better about themselves, and forgiveness is a virtue with sometimes a price too high. . A certain football player lost millions of dollars and spent time in jail for what he did. He was even blacklisted professionally BEFORE he was convicted of any crime. He has since apologized for his actions. Has he recieved much forgiveness? I wish I could say he has but that's not the case. Then again I think the protesters are just happy to have something to do on Sundays. On the same note another Super Bowl winning football player was accused of rape, and I don't think I heard too much about that at all. All the while Tupac turnin in his grave, and Mike Tyson is fuming in the living room of his 1500 sq ft mansion. In the end this woman is human. She was losing, she wasn't playing her best, and she knew it. The lashing out at the line coach was an out for her. And what's with throwing kids into the mix, as far as her moral obligation to set an example on how to behave? I was under the impression that was the parent's job. Apparently Charles Barkley and Serena Williams aren't role models. I'm guilty of poor on-court conduct myself, being thrown out of a basketball game after a touch foul, when I was practically clotheslined by my defender on the previous play. My team still won, I had 18 points 9 assists and 4 steals, and nobody ever called me "ghetto".

Blog - Don't let treadmills happen to you!!

http://www.runnerspace.com/gprofile.php?mgroup_id=65&do=blogs&blog_id=1400

If you've been to a gym almost anywhere in the civilized world,(or uncivilized Kirkuk, Iraq), then you've probobly seen TVs in the gym. Those big beautiful 40+ inch flat screen TVs are how some of us on the other side of the world catch up on the news, and since we're 10 hours behind west coast time, it's the only way we can watch the Lakers lose in the NBA finals in real time (Go Bulls!!). While I'm certain we don't all run the same, one thing I'm sure of is, the treadmill is no place to be distracted. I run on the treadmill here in Kikurk, because the track outside is a nightmare (Just ask Kevin). Even though I can't run now with my cast on, I've put in plenty of miles of these machines. I could run on the road, but I just can't put my personal safety in the hands of some 19 year old behind the wheel of a 70,000 pound combat vehicle, you know?

I run for an hour, on a 2 inch incline, at a speed of 6.5. It's not the hardest run, but if you combine that with the hades like temperature (Can you say, hot as hell?), you'll feel the "burn" nonetheless. One day in particular, I'm about 10 minutes into my run, when the theme from Grey's Anatomy starts to play, and the show starts. I'm so into the show that I'm not paying attention. It's been a while since I glanced over at my friend Irene, who's reading Yoga magazine on the bike. I can still hear The jazz music blaring in my headphones, or at least I thought that was a trumpet I heard. The next thing you know, my foot hits the side of the treadmill, you know, the part that isn't moving. I actually tried to regain my balance on the part that IS moving. Instead, I lose both feet, I'm in mid air for what seemed like 2 full eternities. I've sat at my computer with a bowl of ice cream, watching faceplant videos on youtube. Somehow, it didn't seem as funny when it was my own face. I was a little dizzy, and really embarrased, but I got

back up and ran again, laughing at myself with a band-aid over my eye. I think Irene called me "Left eye" for about 3 days, and I told anyone who asked that I was attacked by a treadmill. So in closing, be careful on those things. Don't let TV get the better of you, or the next faceplant video I laugh at on youtube, might be yours.

Blog - Running for her life

http://www.runnerspace.com/gprofile.php?mgroup_id=65&do=blogs&blog_id=1378

There are a number of reasons why we lace up our shoes to run. For me, running has always been theraputic, challenging, invigorating, and just one more thing at which I could be competitive.

My mother was recently diagnosed with Cancer. Being 10,000km from her side doesn't make things easier, but it makes us work harder to stay in touch. The Cancer she has is spread throughout her body so much that the doctors can't determine it's origin. So we have some big hurdles to get over. I can't help but feel helpless being so far away, so I've decided to do something to make an impact. Something that even if it can't help my mother, it would someday help someone else.

I've decided to do one of the things I do best; run. I'm going to run for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I feel like it's the very least I can do, but I feel like I should do something. This is my opportunity to use what I love to help someone else, and I'm happy about that. I'm very fortunate to have people who support me and cheer me on, and even people who are sweet enough to wait for me at the finish line with a bottle of water.

So now I don't just run for "the love", I also run for "the lives".

"Run baby run"........

Blog - Falling Down

http://www.runnerspace.com/gprofile.php?mgroup_id=65&do=blogs&blog_id=1366

I have a shooting pain in the bottoms of my feet. I've always had high arches, and the only problems I've had with my feet are several ankle sprains during my basketball career, and stress fractures early in my military career. I've never, had to wear shoes that had arch support, as long as they were comfortable. According to my doctor, and the wear of the sole on my shoes, I'm what's called a supinator, meaning I walk on the outside of my feet. I'm a little worried about what this means about my ability to run long distance, but I've overcome worse. When life gives you kemons, make lemonade. When you run with 2 bad feet, chop off one leg and get a prosthetic wheel? Would it be fair? Would it make me faster? Hmm......
