News - Barringer can fulfill final college cross country goal

By David Woods

Jenny Barringer has won NCAA track titles, broken American records, run in an Olympic final and nearly earned a world medal.

The 23-year-old would have a full resume if she ended her running career now. One problem: That resume is incomplete.

"When I came to the University of Colorado, my only real ultimate goal was to win the cross country national championship," she said. "There's some irony in the fact that that chance is coming to me in my absolute last college race ever."

Barringer will have her chance Monday in the NCAA Championships at Terre Haute. The men's 10,000 meters starts at 12:08 p.m. and women's 6,000 meters at 12:58. Both races will be broadcast live on Versus and streamed online via NCAA.com.

Barringer redshirted the 2008 cross country season after the Beijing Olympics. She could have become a pro after a spectacular 2009 college track season featuring a collegiate record of 3 minutes, 59.90 seconds in the 1,500.

Last week, Southern Oregon University’s Brent Ericksen, Head Coach of Cross Country and Track and Field fired his assistant.

Travis Floeck, a senior majoring in Communications with an emphasis
on Journalism, is finishing up his last term at SOU, but planned on
continuing his education through June, while coaching, by taking
prerequisites in pursuit of a Master’s degree.

Floeck, the former associate head coach was fired last week after a meeting requested by Ericksen.

During the meeting, which was held at 1 p.m. on Mon., Nov. 9, Floeck was informed he was no longer on the team.

“He told me he was releasing me and I said, “So you’re firing me?”

“Yes,” said Floeck of Ericksen’s response.

According to Floeck, no reason was given for his termination.
However, when asked for an explanation behind being let go, Ericksen
told him he was “recommended to say it was a coaching decision.”

Ericksen, when asked why Floeck was fired simply stated, “There’s
nothing to say,” and would not comment further about the decision.

“It’s nothing we’re happy about and I’m sure it’s nothing that
Travis is happy about, but it just didn’t work out,” said Interim
Athletic Director Matt Sayre.

When asked questions surrounding Floeck being fired, Sayre repeated, “It just didn’t work out.”

SOU’s cross country team, which held on to their No. 1 ranking after
the Cascade Conference Championship on November 7 will be traveling to
the NAIA National Championships on November 21 in Vancouver, Wash.
without Floeck.

“What they promised me verbally was $8000, food, housing and between $1000 to $1500 in tuition remission each term.”

“I was going by word of mouth,” said Floeck. “That was my biggest mistake,” he added.

“Part of the discussion I had included me finishing [his degree] and
then taking some prerequisites for the grad program. I was planning on
taking one or two classes a term [after fall term],” said Floeck.

Floeck arrived in late August and temporarily stayed in Madrone, but
said he was not given food or reimbursement for buying food during the
first two weeks at SOU.

Though he wasn’t paid until September 1, Floeck donated his time in preparing athletes for the upcoming season.

“It cost me money to work for the school.”

“He’s a terrific young coach,” said Grady O’Connor, Director of
Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country at Lane Community
College, who hired Floeck as an assistant coach of Cross Country and
track in 2007.

After one year, he was promoted to head coach of cross country and
assistant coach of track and field, where he led the men and women to
the Southern Region Championships and Floeck was voted Southern Region
Coach of the Year.

On October 23, Sayre and Floeck met to discuss his working performance.

“The AD had this meeting with me saying I wasn’t working enough,
putting in enough time and that the coach’s expectations were
reasonable on top of practice.”

Floeck said on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays he was in the office
from 10 a.m. to 3:30 a.m., then went to practice and got done around
6:30 p.m., would have dinner and spend an average of an hour or two
hours recruiting each night.

“I have classes on Mondays and Wednesdays so I didn’t get in until 12:30 p.m.,” Floeck said.

On average, Floeck said he put in 10-hour workdays on Tuesday,
Thursday and Friday, including practice hours, but less on days he had
class.

With meets held across the west coast, Floeck also spent roughly every other weekend with the team.

“I’d say I was working between 40, sometimes 50 hours a week and sometimes more.”

“And I was officially getting paid for 21 hours a week.”

Floeck is accustomed to long hours, traveling away from home and working hard.

“Travis is a good guy,” O’Connor said. “He went above and beyond what I asked.”

“We think very highly of him as do many around the northwest; he’s a good person and he’s a great recruiter,” he said.

Ericksen may have been within his right to fire his assistant, but
Floeck believes the terms in which he was fired are questionable and
raise some ethical concerns.

“I played my roll as an assistant coach,” said Floeck. “I did what
the coach asked of me and never vocalized any disagreements; only when
he asked my opinion did I give it.”

While verbally promised $1500 in tuition for each term, Floeck said his continued pursuit in getting it was difficult.

“It took a lot of awkward conversations and arguments,” said Floeck.
Adding, “They ended up telling me they were giving me $1500 in tuition
remission for the year and not the term like I was originally told.”

At the end of his first week he said he had a meeting with Sayre and
members of Resident Life where he was told he would be part of a new
program.

“It was called a Graduate Peer Advisor Program and I wasn’t told about this program until I already arrived in September.”

Floeck said the first time he heard about the program was when he
was sitting down with Residential Life and Sayre, who informed him that
he’d be expected to work with the other members and insinuated that the
tuition remission would be tied to his work with Cross Country, as well
as, the GPA Program.

“The last few weeks they tried to get the ball rolling with it and I
was supposed to have a meeting, but it was cancelled, because I was
fired,” he said.

Though he had arrived in August to start work, Floeck said there was
no written document listing his exact duties or expectations, other
than ones that were told to him by Ericksen.

“I was given a list of duties exactly one week before I was fired.”

Concerned with the student-athletes, Floeck said he didn’t think it
was a good idea to be released so soon before Nationals, but was told
by Ericksen that he had already thought of that and made his choice.

“You know, when you hear about a coach being let go mid-season, the impression is that I screwed up,” said Floeck.

“That’s simply not true,” Floeck adamantly said. “It was a drastic move.”

According to O’Connor, Floeck has always had the student-athletes interest at mind.

“He took no time for himself whatsoever,” said O’Connor.

Floeck spoke to Marion Boenheim, Associate Vice President of Human Services who informed him she would look into the situation.

“He’s [Ericksen] told me its not personal, but with two weeks left before Nationals, it feels very personal,” said Floeck.

As of Fri., Nov. 13, Floeck’s coaching biography and contact
information was no longer available under the “Track and Field/Cross
Country” category of Athletic Staff on the Raiders website.

“They act like and say I’m not working enough.”

Floeck’s experiences at SOU go beyond coaching. He was a runner here
from 2000 to 2005, before leaving to work for Nike then on to LCC as an
assistant coach and head coach, before returning to SOU.

“I’ve gone to school here. I ran for the program. I’ve bled for them,” said Floeck.

“At no point have I ever felt like they were taking care of me,” he said.

In the end, O’Conor believes Floeck being fired is not the end of his coaching career.

“Travis is going to bounce back,” he said. “He’s a great coach; somewhere, somehow, he’s going to end up succeeding.”

Still, many questions have been unanswered and Floeck agrees that all coaches are different.

“I know they aren’t bad people and they’re trying to be creative;
they’re trying to get as much as they can out of the money they have,”
said Floeck.

“But they aren’t accounting for the fact that these are people’s lives.”

“You’re always going to have different philosophies,” he said.

“I didn’t think it was so bad; I didn’t think we had to be best
friends, but I’m not in his head so I don’t know why he made the
decision. Only he knows that,” said Floeck.

“It’s going to be really hard not being able to go to Nationals with [the athletes],” said Floeck.

“They’re the best I’ve worked with and I really think they’re doing great things and going to do really well,” he added.

“I just hope it’s not going to be a distraction,” said Floeck as the team gears up for next week’s meet in Washington.

Pre-Blog before PAC 10s

I have done my best to prepare for this meet; I have been
cooking myself steaks, pork chops, lasagna, really awesome hearty wholesome
meals, ones that will make me feel good. I have been relaxed and enjoying
myself. No problems in the last couple of weeks. I am really just super excited
about this meet. May 15th (day before) I really noticed how excited
I was about this meet. And all night I felt like it was Christmas Eve or like I
was going to Disney land the next day. I was so excited about the next day that
when I was woken up by the birds in the morning at 6am. It was hard for me to
really fall back asleep.

The Wednesday prior to the meet (Saturday) we had shot put
competition. It’s a light shot (4K 8.8lbs) just to be explosive. We do overhead
backwards throws, underhand forwards throws and overhead forwards throws with a
3K 6.6lbs med ball. I normally do pretty well in the first 2 but Alex really
always beats me in the last one. For weeks I would never get close to beating
him. I couldn’t understand how I could beat him in other things but not this last
one. Alex decided to go first and me second. I asked him if he was sure. And he
said he was. First throws were out and he was ahead by a good foot. I was
pissed. Then he throws further on his second throw….. So I match it, and I am
only a few inches behind him. He throws
again and throws another foot further. It was amazing I didn’t know if I could
beat him. So I throw again and match him. We are neck and neck, it was the best
competition I had had all year long and it was in practice. We kept throwing
further, and matching throws till the last throw, Alex didn’t throw further, he
left the stage open for me to take the win, if I could only throw a few inches
further. I got jacked up, let out a roar on my throw and got him by 7cm
(2inches).

Now you may ask y did I go off on that tangent when I should
be blogging about PAC 10s but to me this practice meant a lot to me, it meant
that no matter what happens, if someone is ahead of me all meet, and there is a
competition for first, that I have the drive and the power, to come out on top
in the end and to win it. That meant a lot to me. And I can't wait to see what
happens at PAC 10s

PAC 10s is over now. And I came out on top.

It was a little weird, I felt very relaxed, ready to go.
Ready to pop one. But there is also this thought in your mind that you haven’t
thrown in a long time, that 3 weeks is too much rest, that you have forgotten
how to really do it.

It was a hot day! 77 degrees and I was sweating. We received
news the day before that we would be throwing in the second of 2 flights that
day. This was somewhat of a problem. We get 30 minutes on the field and then
first flight goes, then only 15 minutes to warm up for the second flight. This just meant that we would have to warm up
with first flight, then wait around for 45 minutes (getting cold with each
minute) and then warm up again for 15 minutes before our flight. This is
something we are not used to. I don’t think anyone is used to, so it’s kind of
hard to judge how to properly warm up, but not get exhausted. We warmed up
well. I was feeling good and Alex and Britton said they were feeling good too. We
went inside to rest in the shade; we kept warm by throwing light med balls and
relaxing on some high jump pits as well. We got the call that it was the last round
of the throws and we came outside. The best throw was 208’7” so if we threw
further than that then you could make it to finals

First throws were underway I threw hard; I thought it was
good, but when I looked up it only landed slightly over the 70m line. I wanted
to scratch it super bad, it was a terrible throw. Corey white had already
thrown 248’ so I was just in second. I was super disappointed. But I made it to
finals already with that throw so I knew I had plenty of throws to make it
happen. Corey white threw again and skied one so high. It was crazy. Probably 200
feet in the air and he was pissed, he scratched it. Alex threw and knocked me
in 3rd place with a new PR of 235’5” I was happy that he PRed but I was
now sitting 3rd place. I have won every meet so far and I wasn’t about
to allow it to happen again. My second
throw I knew I had to really hit it. Again I thought I had a good throw but the
jav landed short of the 70m mark. It was just a few weeks ago that I was
landing javs just under the 80m mark. So I was really pissed. It just wasn’t my
day! There are days in the javelin (and all throws) that you may just not have
your day. I felt like I wasn’t going to do good all day. I also felt like the Olympic
trials were happening all over again. At the trials I had 6 weeks off and
because I was coming off of an injury my timing was way off and I did not throw
well. I felt the same way. 3 weeks off and my timing was all off. I wasn’t using
my hips into my throw.

I kept on seeing my coach Christina after every throw. And asking
her what I was doing wrong, they felt good and strong, I felt relaxed, and like
I wasn’t putting too much pressure on myself for this meet. But something wasn’t
going right. I was reminded of Wednesday when Alex and I were throwing shot puts
for competition and how we went throw for throw, and that it’s not over until
the last throw. But I also knew my reputation this year as my first throw always
being my biggest throw. I have not thrown all 6 throws since our second meet (Stanford)
so this was going to be a test of endurance for me. I didn’t want to be known
as “one and done Cyrus”, I wanted people to know that I am competitive and can
have big throws on anyone of my 6 throws. I wanted people to fear that I could
pop one at any time. But I was also worried that anyone today could pop into
first. Kyle Nielsen from Washington warmed up really well and I was worried he
would pass me and Alex up, and I knew Ryan Young has throw 250 and could throw
that at any time. It was really anyone’s game, if they wanted to take it.

My third throw was no better, so I scratched it; I was going
into finals in 3rd place. Which gave Alex and Corey White the upper
hand on me, always knowing what they need to throw to win it, and gave them
another chance to throw after me.

Finals round came up and I was trying to just relax, there
was something that I couldn’t control and it was my heart rate. It was
affecting how I threw. I needed to calm down and be confident that I could do
it. The difference between my meets after the Pepsi Invite (where I had my big
throw) was that I was confident that I could come to the meet and just win it. And
with that confidence I could come out and throw 78-80m every week. I opened up
finals and threw a miserable 218. I just kept reminding myself that big throws
can come on any throw of the competition, I remember at Oregon relays Britton
nelson threw his PR on his 3rd of 4th throw, and that we
need to keep our head in it, never give up and keep on throwing.

The 5th throw was a little better, I don’t know
what made it any better but it pushed me into 2nd place, basically Alex
and I had switched spots, from a team standpoint whether Alex got second and I got
3rd or vice versa means no difference point wise so I didn’t feel
really good about the throw. It didn’t change anything, but if I could take 1st place and Alex could have 3rd then that’s a 2 point swing. That’s what
I was looking for.

I ran over to my coach and I felt like both my big toes were
broken; I landed in the push up position after my throw and my feet landed hard
(toes first) onto the ground, I was hoping it wouldn’t affect my last throw. Christina
told me to go from my full approach. It’s something we kind of we have been
working on for the last 2 weeks (which is not a long time). It’s a long approach
that should be able to allow me to relax and not have to push it so hard in my
final steps to get to my max speed on the runway. It’s just 2 extra steps. But Christina
said that I am in second place, I have nothing to lose, and that we need to
practice it and get ready for regionals, nationals and USAs. It was going to be
an approach that is of professional level, very fast, hard to control, and
unpracticed could be very painful. I won’t lie I was not looking forward to it.
I didn’t think I could throw from the full approach yet. But I knew that it could
not change my current 2nd place status and if anything could only
get me into better position. I wasn’t positive where my competition mark
(compared to my practice mark) would be. The adrenaline you get in a
competition makes your mark much further than because of the added speed. But I
didn’t want to change my mark.

I knew I didn’t have much left in the tank, and normally
(since the Oregon preview didn’t go well) I don’t like the crowd to get me
going, the added adrenaline is too much for me. But I had nothing to lose, I needed
to get pumped. I asked the crowd to start clapping. And I was off. I threw and I
was thrown to the ground again. I got up and saw the jav stick just a little
big past the middle of 70 and 80m lines. Marked off at 76m. I was pretty sure
that took the lead, and then the reader board read it of in feet….. 250ft
5inches. 2 feet further than Corey White.

Originally I wanted to throw big the first throw, set the
tone, and put the pressure on everyone else, but today all the pressure was on
me. But after that throw I enjoyed the position I was in. I had thrown it at
the last second, it gave Corey white one chance to throw better than me (rather
than all 5). I just had to wait patiently to see what would happen. I watched
his throw go up, he had a lot of power in it but it was not thrown through the
point, which stalled it out and cost him a lot of distance, but it still landed
about middle of the 70-80m line, I was pretty sure I had the win, but waited
till they read it off. The called it out 74.09. I instantly praised God for the
win, for the ability he had given me to bring home the victory. I didn’t win
because of all the training I do, or the coaching staff or facilities at Oregon
but rather because God gave me the ability and resources to be good.

I will admit the meet was a little bitter sweet, the series I
had was terrible, and the final throw of 250 was not what I wanted. But the drama
and the win was amazing. I was quite happy, but overall I have bigger fish to
fry this year than just PAC 10s

Blog - Oregon Relays (javelin)

http://www.runnerspace.com/gprofile.php?mgroup_id=87&do=blogs&blog_id=1293

My entry is all but a week late but i still wanted to vent, and write out what has happened over the last week.

there was Oregon Relays! it has been a long awaited meet, basically my favorite meet of the year so far. it has had the best competition for me and really just wanted to get out and throw big.

the weather held up a litlte bit and i was ready to throw!

something i have been told by all my coaches not to say to media (and i am sure someone in the media will read this so i am saying it) but they say, "never tell anyone how far your are going to throw" because if you do..... and you dont throw that far, then they think u are a disappointment. i wasnt exactly telling the media, but i told alex wolff that i was going to throw really really far. and then i whispered into coach Dan Steele's ear that i was going to throw 80m (262'6"). i had been begging my coaches all week to place an 80m line on hayward's field to give me something to shoot for and they finally did, so i had to get it. i really wanted tos how that i could be consistant and throw 80m more than just once.

so i dont know if i really painted a target on my back, of such a goal that if i didnt achieve it that i was a failure, but i figured only ppl that knew were me and my coach.

i was the last guy in my flight, and i was really warmed up, i even took a long break before we thrrew, i wanted to be fresh. i saw John Hetzendorf throwing and he looked really well, warming up with no speed, right around 70m (230') i wasnt super worried about anything because i know his PR is 256 from like 2005, i still saw him as competition, hes experienced and if i dont have a good day he will beat me.

everyone opened up with their first throws really bad, i was suprised, John only threw 232' it was kind of like playing horse shoes, and the first player throws and the pit is left wide open for u to take it. i got up and hit one pretty good. there was a pretty strong head wind (which i hate) coming at me, so i threw low (as to gain lift from the wind) it was a lazer beam, i knew that it wouldnt be better than my PR (272'10") so i walked over to my coach Christina Scherwin for advice. the announcer said it was 79.83m i was so close to my goal. and it was on my first throw. i was determined to throw farther.

the next throw was no better it was kind of a disappointing meet for me, i was shooting for consistancy and throwing 6 quality throws, but after my first it was all down hill. i had thrown 4 throws and we decided that i was not gaining anything and had the potential of getting hurt because i was trying to throw so hard with my arm, so we pulled the plug.

it was a great meet, i wish the winds were better, but britton nelson had a great PR throwing 214'6" so i was really proud of him, i cant wait to see how he does

as for now most of us are taking a little break till PAC 10s. its going to be awesome. there are so many guys in the PAC 10 throwing javelin over 70 m. the funny thing is that like a few years ago you could win the PAC 10 with about a 73m toss, now it takes so much more, i cant wait to see what happens, then regionals and nationals. Chris Hill is back and fresh so i cant wait to see how he does in his conference and at nationals.

its going to be a big year. i would keep your eyes and ears peeled for the results in the Jav, there are a lot of young guys ready to show our country proud

I will try to make this short and sweet.

No offense to UCLA javelin thrower but this dual meet wasn’t
exactly a big competition. There were 4 javelin thrower in the meet, 1 UCLA guy
and 3 Oregon guys. We were ready to sweep the competition. Being as the
competition wasn’t that great (UCLAs best throw was 194’…. And today he threw
188’) this was just a meet to go out throw once and get the Win. We were
training through the meet and getting ready for Oregon Relays next week.

We were supposed to lose to UCLA by 1 point. It was really
disappointing because all of us javelin throwers knew that we were doing ALL
that we could. I mean were planned on sweeping the javelin and scoring 9 points
for the team, we can’t get any better than that! So it’s kind of a bummer that
we couldn’t help the team out any more and pick up a couple extra points for
winning by a whole lot or something.

I was probably more warmed up for this meet than I have ever
been, I don’t like excessive warm ups. But we had so much time. It was weird;
normally you are always pressed for time. While we were warming up the Long
Jump was going on, UCLAs big long jumper just had a great jump at 25’2.5” and I
was like great we need to win this meet, which means we can't give up positions
like that. I was kind of worried, but not to fear super man came wearing green
and yellow. Ashton Eaton on the very next jump excited the crowd by jumping 25’8”
he just killed it! I was pumped and ready to go. It seems like ever meet I get
and adrenaline rush from someone on my team, and competition like that gets me
going!

The big goals in my head were to take first, sweep the
javelin event, take the meet record (234’) and this is where it’s kind of rude
but I hope if he ever reads this he finds it as a compliment…. But Corey White
is an amazing javelin thrower. I always hear how he is a great guy, and he’s a
stud javelin thrower don’t get me wrong, if you can throw within 20 feet of Corey
White then I am impressed, but Corey and I are both in the PAC 10! He’s what I have
to shoot for every meet! He threw at the Mt Sac Relays the day before and threw
241’ and took 3rd place, my next goal was to throw further than he
did at my meet. It doesn’t matter if we are both throwing in the same meet or a
thousand miles away it’s always a competition between us. I want the best for him;
I hope that we can be teammates on the USA team together, so there is no bad
blood between us, but it will always be very competitive. Last and final goal
was to throw better than the winner of the Mt Sac Relays, he threw 247’. Even though
this meet was a practice meet I still had goals of things I wanted to
accomplish.

The Javelin started, Alex opened up with a very respectable
70.05m javelin throw (229’10”) and I opened with 250’ it was definitely good
enough to walk away from the competition with a win, but my legs were SOOOO far
off, that it was just depressing. I accomplished all my meet goals but there
was just something that we (my coach and I) didn’t like about the throw. I needed
to learn something out of this meet. My legs were slow and my steps were off, I
don’t know what happened with my legs, but it was bad. I wanted to do one more,
hopefully it would have better legs, and a better throw would follow.

I took a pass on my
next throw, with normally 10-14 athletes in a javelin flight and we only had 4
this meet, it was a little too much throwing, one after the other, so I gave
myself some rest and took a pass on my second throw, 3rd round came
up and I just wanted to get a little more acceleration on my throw, better
footwork and see what happened. The throw was better, 257’2” close to 80m, I was
very pleased with the distance. It’s hard to get ecstatic about a throw if it’s
not a PR, but I was happy inside. My coach and I were still not pleased with my
leg work, we wanted 1 more throw. I was totally fine with taking one more
throw.

Normally in my early throws I don’t want the slow clap, it’s
just too much pressure and adrenaline in early throws to be asking for it. But later
in the meet on a last throw, you are tired and have really nothing to get you
going, so I asked the crowd to help me out and give me the clap. I was really
disappointed with my last throw (it only went about 241-242ft) but we pulled
the plug and stopped throwing. I was
very happy with my series of throws, it’s what we said we wanted to do, we
wanted to throw some decent marks in between my old PR and my new PR, when we
get consistent at that then we will have a good chance at PRing again.

there couldnt have been a better topper than coming into the final event (4X400) and Oregon and UCLA being tied up. i was so impressed with all our athletes stepping it up. it was the best meet i have ever seen in my life, and if you dont think this dual meet was exciting then i dont know what to tell you. it was better than any of the Oregon Basketball games this year thats for sure. we will keep on trying to put on a show for everyone in Eugene, a lot more home meets to come!

As for now, we need to get ready for next week (Oregon relays).
It’s going to be a lot of fun. Last year I was in the B section but took 3<sup>rd</sup> overall in the A section. This year I hope to win it. I never count anyone out;
I never consider anything an easy win.
