BURNABY, B.C.
- It's been a three and half year process, but Simon Fraser's (B.C.)
Ruky Abdulai is now officially a Canadian citizen. At a ceremony
earlier this morning (Jan. 31) in downtown Vancouver,
the fourth year Simon Fraser University Clan track and field star and
Coquitlam resident was sworn in by Immigration Canada, and now has the
possibility of competing for Canada at the 2008 Olympic Summer Games in Beijing, China.

Abdulai's
personal best of 6.70m in the long jump, set at the 2007 NAIA Outdoor
Track and Field Championships, would have broken the current Canadian
record of 6.66m, set by Nicole Devonish in 1996, had she been Canadian
at the time.

"It feels so good, I am so proud to today to say I
am a Canadian," said an ecstatic Abdulai, who now truly is a Canadian
after spending the rest of the morning waiting in line at the passport
office.

"It's been a long journey, from applying for landed
immigrant status and reading all of the rules and then following all
the rules and procedures, it just means so much to me. I am so grateful
to be surrounded by such nice people, from Brit [SFU head track and
field coach Brit Townsend] and the coaching staff, to all the people at
SFU, to all of my family and friends who have helped me along the way,
I really am grateful."

http://www.runnerspace.com/profile.php?member_id=20&do=news&news_id=2424

All the pieces were there. Laid out and available for full view. The
problem was that Zora Golcevska didn’t know how to fit them together to
form a big picture, and in every effort she put forth the exercise only
became more maddening.

In time, she was mad at God, whoever He might be.

So 2 years ago when Golcevska’s junior college coach Eric Baron
suggested that she continue her track & field career at a Christian
university by the name of Azusa Pacific, Golcevska instinctively
laughed out loud.

“Coach was tolerant enough with me to laugh at his idea,” said
Zora as she began to retrace the steps toward one of the most difficult
yet significant decisions in her life. “He convinced me to look at APU.
I like challenges in my life, and this was one of the biggest ones
because it was a Christian school. I was suspicious of what was going
on in a Christian’s life.”

Blog - When i dip, you dip, we dip...

http://www.runnerspace.com/profile.php?member_id=20&do=blogs&blog_id=300

I'll give you all your answer before you even ask the
question. Yes, I am the worst, laziest and most inconsistent blogger on the
site. And as I realized this, I also noticed that my blogging skills have a
stark correlation with all my other sweet skills. The correlation is that, they
really aren’t that sweet. I can walk on
my toe knuckles like a Gorilla, I can seed a news article in less than 90
seconds, I can also sleep for an entire day and accomplish nothing.. Do you see the trend? Just
look at my sentence, paragraph and over all though structure. So, I’m going to
try to not suck so bad in the future, but, come on... really??

In other news, I’m running a bunch again. I’ve got zero
injuries and I’m dropping those extra pounds I packed on from not running for a
while. Me and the Westmainia (Westmania and I if you wanna get proper (want to
if you’re going to get picky)) have also been hitting up the gym every night
after work to get in some extra cardio because we have been wasting our lives the
past two months.

I’ve been going crazy trying to get in shape, let my show
you a little bit of the contrast between and injured Burns and a healthy Burns.

Avg. day of activity (injured):

8:30am – Alarm goes off for practice, hit snooze

8:40am – Alarm goes off again, think about hitting snooze,
but just turn it off instead. Doze back off to sleep while thinking of a reason
for not being at practice.

Some where between 11 and noon – roll out of bed, check my
Gmail, aim message, facebook and funny videos on college humor.

12:30pm – eat some brunch, prolly a box of cookies and/or
some whipped cream stright from the can. Think about going on the bike or to
the pool. Think of 5 things id rather
do. Do none of this, check college humor for more funny videos.

1:30pm – Watch a movie on Netflix or play some Tiger Woods
’08. Think about eh other more important things I should be doing, like
running, working, finding a job, paying bills, not wasting my life, cleaning?

5pm-9pm – Go work at tutoring. Here I don’t really do work (I’m at tutoring right now). Look for funny videos AND funny pictures on college
humor. Leave early.

9pm-3am – eat some junk food or ice cream for dinner, then
NOTHING. Literally I some how manage to waste 6 hours and get nothing done.
Some how I get home from work and enter this void of emptiness. I prolly need a
girlfriend, or a hobbie.

3am – Put in a movie to try and fall asleep to, I’m pretty
much an insomniac. I watched Gattaca last night for the fourth night in
a row.

??am – 8:30am – The only useful thing I’ve done in the last
24 hours; sleep.

Avg. day of activities (NOT injured):

8:30am – Alarm goes off for practice, hit snooze

8:40am – Alarm goes off again, hit snooze…again

8:50am – Alarm goes off… OH F$#&. Get dressed, wash up a
little and head out by 9am

9am -12pm – Practice. Depending on the day of the week this
can vary a lot, but it’s always tiring. Today was an easy day, with just a 40
minute run over to Hayward
for pillars, ab work and hurdle drills.

12:00pm – get to my room,
check my mail, my phone, facebook, more mail and college humor. Sit around for
awhile, eat something healthy, like a grilled chicken salad or some tuna and edamane.
No more junk food. Get around to taking a shower.

1:30pm-5pm pretty much the same as before. I’ll grab a nap,
watch a movie, run some errands, pretty much whatever I need done.

5pm-9pm – Working at tutoring, working on runnerspace. Just getting
it done. Tonight I won $25 on a scratch off. BOOYA.

9pm-11pm – Hitting up Oakway fitness center with Westman. We
go every weeknight and get in 45-60min of cardio on the bikes. Then we do some
stretching and some abs.

11pm-11:30pm – Eat some dinner, healthy stuff again. Jump in
the shower. Get ready for bed.

11:30pm-3am: even though I just got ready for bed, I’m a
complete insomniac; I rock out on my computer or watching a movie all night.

3am - Find another movie to watch and passout to.

… so that’s pretty much my life over the past 2 months. Also,
my essay on running and hotties is still in the works and should be out soon!!

Blog - Wednesday... not thursday.

http://www.runnerspace.com/profile.php?member_id=20&do=blogs&blog_id=202

Wednesday. Not only is it a day of the week. Not only is it the middle day of the week, but its my least favorite day of the week. Its just kinda there. The excitement from the previous weekends endeavors, races and meets begin to fade. But the yearning for the coming weekend hasn’t quite hit you yet. You pretty much spend your day in a melo funk. Not cool. Now that I’ve set this depressing tone, let me just say that this particular Wednesday rocked a little harder then most, almost so hard that I might have accidently mistaken it for a Thursday. That a pretty big deal. So, why was today so grand? Well, it’s because I ran today. Its because I ran today and nothing hurt. It’s because I ran pretty hard today and nothing hurt. And why did I run hard today, when I was only doing a nice, easy long run? Because of a little running phenomenon I call the hottie factor. What is the hottie factor? Check in tomorrow and find out more in my two part special feature.

Running by a hottie of the opposite sex: An in-depth look at the hottie factor and running etiquette.
By Gered Burns

Part 1: Feb 14th

Part 2 Feb 15th

And last but not least. I want to try and take full advantage of the functionality of this blog, so I’m going to bring you a little song of the day action. Try and bring out some new artist and old, just good song I think my fellow runners would enjoy on the mp3 players... or walkmans?!??

And because tis Valentines day. heres a little seduction...

Blog - From the mind of a slightly less than normal person.

http://www.runnerspace.com/profile.php?member_id=20&do=blogs&blog_id=190

I'm sooo blogging right now. I’ve tried this who blogging thing a couple of time before. I did one on Blogspot for about three weeks back in November. Soon after that I began and even lazier rendition of weak blogs on here. The later of the two was pretty much my bloggings waterloo. so after a three month hiatus, im back, and ever more ready to numb your mind.

But this time around should be a little different. The downfall of my previous blogs also, coincided with the downfall of my training. I hit a rough patch of injuries and self-doubt, but I and my blog, like the phoenix, shall rise again. And like the tale of the rising phoenix, we shall be stronger, faster, swifter and slightly better with grammar.

So just to catch everyone up to speed on what I’ve been doing out here. I’ve been hurt for a while. My body is getting used to high milage training. At least, its high milage to me. I have faith it’s going to drop my times now that im getting back in the swing of things. Tomorrow will be my first day back to doing workouts with the gang. Im pretty pumped. Though I know I will be taking that back after about half of an interval. So there it is folks, ill try and get back at this lil’ thang daily and do ya proud. Proud.

P.s. Happy Valentines Day
