News - T.O. Flyers salute outgoing club president | www.ToAcorn.com | Thousand Oaks Acorn

The Thousand Oaks Flyers recently honored outgoing board president Bob McCarter.

McCarter founded the T.O. Flyers track and field club nearly 30 years ago and has been on the board since its inception.

He is presently the head coach for the Youth/Intermediate girls' team. In addition to his involvement with the club, McCarter also coaches at Thousand Oaks High.

The board also gave a warm welcome to incoming president Tim Owens.

The Thousand Oaks Flyers Track Club has served the community's youth for three decades. The club trains athletes ages 6 to 13 in all areas of track and field events, and the club has 275 youngsters during its spring season.

High jump

Ranked as one of the best sophomore girls’ high jumpers in the nation with her school record-setting clearance of 5-8, equalling the third best performance in Ventura County history. The county and Marmonte League champion placed second at the Division II finals and third at the Masters Meet, qualifying for the state championships. For hobbies, French likes playing soccer and traveling on mission trips. Her favorite movies are Hot Rod, Dumb and Dummer plus Walk to Remember. Former women’s soccer great Mia Hamm is French’s favorite athlete. She enjoys eating pasta and watching “That ’70s Show” and “The Office.”

Track talent makes final stop at state meet

Thousand Oaks High's Lydia French was one of several local athletes to take part in last weekend's CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High at Clovis.

French, however, didn't clear 5-foot-4 in the girls' high jump, ending her solid postseason run.

Oaks Christian's Jules Sharpe placed fifth in the boys' high jump with a 6-9 leap.

The 2009 CIF-State Track and Field Championships project to be another sensational affair, with this year’s cast of student-athletes well prepared to uphold the second-to-none tradition that Golden State athletes annually enjoy on the national landscape! This year’s special cast includes a pair of national record holders and a World Youth Games medalist at the top of the heap, headlining a very deep field of one dozen athletes arriving in the Central Valley while ranking among the top 10 all-time in state annals in their respective events. With a new home in Fresno on a spectacular facility, look for the action to be hotter than ever this weekend while the sport’s attention turns to the Golden State.
