Coaching the Thursday Performance Group this summer has been an incredible experience for the coaches as well as for the runners. Heather Hanscom, a professional marathoner for Brooks, is the primary coach from week to week, and she writes and oversees the workouts. "I really enjoy working with the group," says Hanscom. "They are all great people. Seeing them run workouts, talking with them about their running, hearing about their races, and just getting to know them reminds me of why I run, and that is for the pure enjoyment of it."

There have also been several other local professionals who have helped out and made appearances. Matt Scherer, Adam Steele, and Marc Sylvester, all of Nike Oregon Track Club, have spent time with the runners at the track and afterwards over burgers at Villard Street Pub. "It's been awesome spending time with the runners. They are a very fun group to be around," says Adam Steele. Mike Black, co-owner of Eugene Running Company and founder of the Thursday Performance Group, has also been very helpful and supportive with the transition of coaching to Fast RunnerZ.

The summer competitions were highlighted by marathons, road races, and the All-Comers meets at South Eugene High School. In the short four months since Fast RunnerZ has been coaching the group, there have been numerous noteworthy performances. Chris Shultz and Richard Gambino lowered their mile bests by 67 and 52 seconds, respectively, while other runners in the group saw more than 15 personal records. "When I started with the group," states Heather Hanscom, "I asked everyone to write down their race schedule and what times they hoped to run. It was exciting to see that most people had either met or exceeded their goals."

Coaches and runners alike are looking forward to even better performances on the track next year but are looking first to the fall racing season. Marathoners are in the beginning stages of their training programs while others are working towards local road races almost every week from now through December.

Team XO Well Represented at Eugene Challenge Mile
Eugene - OR - May 27 2006 - The Eugene Running Company hosted the Eugene Challenge Mile for the second year the day before the anticipated Prefontaine Classic. With over 200 entries and prize money on the line, Team XO made sure to represent itself and support the local event with athletes from the team as well as the Team XO / Lane Distance Project training group led by Ross Krempley. “It’s great to have a local meet that both the community and the elite runners can participate in that isn’t a 5k or 10k… It is nice to have a road race option for the middle distance runners,” said Krempley. “It really shows the commitment Eugene has to the sport of running.” XO was led by Eric Logsdon (4:01 miler) who placed 2nd overall with a time of 4:10.2 after the homestretch kick went to Blake Boldon who won the “B Section” of the Pre Classic 1500 meter run earlier that day. Max King wasn’t too far behind with his 6th place finish clocking 4:12.6 and Dylan Mason rounded out the XO crew with a 9th place finish (4:21.5). Other XO and Lane Distance Project finishers included: David Morgan, Matt Barnhart, Anthony Monteleone, Toma Starodubtseva and Nikki Gledhill. A special thanks goes to the Eugene Running Company for hosting the event as well as all the volunteers who helped make the event such a success.   XO Spring Update: Spring ’06 Brings More Success for XO Team XO will be sending at least ten elite athletes to this year’s USA Track & Field Championships held in Indianapolis, Indiana from June 21-25. The team will once again be led by its elites in the field events including Cari Soong (women’s hammer), Nikki McEwen (women’s pole vault), Simidele Adeagbo (women’s triple jump), Leonidas Watson (men’s long and triple jumps), Kyley Johnson (men’s high jump), and Adam Kriz (men’s hammer). On the track they will be joined by Max King (men’s steeplechase), Eric Logsdon (men’s 5000), and Jane Rudkin (women’s steeplechase). Several other athletes are on the bubble for getting into the National meet: Ross Krempley (men’s 800), Phil Alexander (men’s 200), John Stiegeler (men’s javelin), and Jason Boness (men’s high jump). Coverage and results will be posted on the website during or shortly following the meet. “USAs will cap the best outdoor season we’ve ever had,” says team Director Ross Krempley, “in terms of depth, participation, and cream of the crop type of athletes posting dozens and dozens of wins this year.” In its 3rd year, the XO Invite garnered national attention with media sources like Dyestat.com flying in to cover the meet as one of their elite high school events on the USA calendar. Despite the maelstrom of rain and wind centered on Hayward Field that day, the athletes’ competitive fire was never doused. Setting numerous meet records, state leading marks, and even crowning a new overall team champion (Jesuit), the meet was deemed another great success by meet organizers. “It couldn’t have been done without the generous help of our volunteers who braved the wind, rain, and cold for the entire day,” said Krempley. XO appreciates the support of and would like to thank the Oregon Track Club for its continued partnership with Team XO as well as the University of Oregon’s Track and Field program. “There is a pretty sweet synergy between the three organizations,” said Krempley of XO, the OTC, and UO. “We are pleased with how the XO Invite turned out and was a means of highlighting UO and two of the most prominent track organizations in America.” Finally, information for the XO Kids Camp is up! The Kids Camp is designed for kids of any athletic background to improve their speed, hops, endurance, and overall athleticism while having fun doing it!
