By Mary Albl of DyeStat

With Maine running legend Ruth White graduated from Orono and running in college, opportunity for the top spot was re-opened.

On Saturday at Twin Brook Recreation Area, Teanne Ewings made the most of her chance. Ewings, a senior who runs for the Houlton/Greater Houlton Christian Academy co-op team but is homeschooled, covered the 5,000-meter course in a winning time of 18 minutes, 38.9 seconds, the fastest time of the day for any female runner, to claim the Class C crown.

Ewings had finished second to White the past two years.

As a team, she helped lead Houlton/GHCA to a second place finish with 60 points. Wayneflete won the title with 57 points.

The Falmouth girls put four runners in the top 13 to score 61 points and claim the program’s first state title since 2000. Portland High’s Samantha Moore, a senior, defended her Class A title in 18:48. 6.

The boys Class A was a tight battle as Scarborough edged out defending champion Portland, 69-70. Portland’s Aran Johnson won the race in 16:18.8.

The boys Class C race was dominated by Orono as senior Ben Arsenault, who won the race in 16:54.4. Orono captured four of the top seven spots to score 32 points. Second place went to George Stevens Academy with 109 points.

York junior Zoe Carroll, who finished the challenging course in 18:49.8, won the Class B girls title. Carroll is also on the soccer team this fall and is in her first cross country season. The team title went to  Mt. Desert Island with 41 points.

The Freeport boys repeated as Class B champs putting up 69 points and capturing the 3-4 spots. Lake Region senior Sam Laverdiere won in 15:52.7, the only runner under 16 minutes and the fastest performance in the entire meet.
