Centrowitz Making Attempt at American Mile RecordPublished by
Centrowitz Will Chase Webb's 3:46.91 Record On Saturday By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Reigning Olympic 1,500-meter champion Matthew Centrowitz announced on social media Wednesday that he's going to try and break the American record in the mile Saturday at Jesuit High in Portland. For Centrowitz, the chase would be a demonstration of his fitness and a potential confidence boost as he prepares to travel to Tokyo for the Olympic Games. The event will be free to attend and will be live streamed by PDX Track/Tracklandia. It is scheduled to begin at 9:10 p.m. Pacific. Alan Webb's American record of 3:46.91 was set 14 years ago at a small meet in Brasschaat, Belgium. That day, July 21, 2007, Webb broke the 25-year-old record of Steve Scott (3:47.69). Webb's mile is the 16th fastest in world history. Centrowitz's fastest mile is 3:50.53, from the 2014 Prefontaine Classic, a race where he finished eighth. Ayanleh Souleiman of Djibouti ran the fastest mile ever on U.S. soil that day, with 3:47.32. Centrowitz's 2014 time remains the fastest mile by an American in a domestic meet.
