Bloomfield Sweeps CCC Indoor TF Championship Titles as Several Meet Records TumblePublished by
By Ron Knapp A clash of powerhouses of the Central Connecticut Conference took place on Saturday during their Indoor Track and Field Championships in New Haven that saw several meet records replaced. The 30 teams of the largest conference in the state competed for overall titles and the 3 division titles for both boys and girls that saw Bloomfield sweep both sides. Bloomfield boys scored 78 points to edge runner-up EO Smith with 67 and defending champion Windsor with 61.5 followed by Southington (37), Simsbury (34) as 24 teams scored. The Bloomfield girls retained their top ranking in the league scoring 103 points with Windsor in second place with 93 points and Glastonbury in 3rd with 51 points with Manchester with 48 and Hall with 40 as 23 teams scored. Boys Meet Highlights Meet Records In the finals of the 55m hurdles East Hartford’s Davian Johnson sped to another 7.27 that is a US#5 and CT all time #3 tying his best from earlier in January and one hundredths of a second from equaling the state record of 7.26. Windsor’s Shelldon Simpson II continues to dominate the short sprints as sprinted victory in the 55m finals in 6.43 followed by a 300m meet record in 34.22 and then returned as the lead-off leg in the 4x400m blasting a 49.80 to give the lead to teammates Jaylen Wesley (53.22), Michael Huff (52.92) and Daunte Biggs (52.42) as their effort resulted in a finish of 3:38.36. Their time bettered Weaver’s 2009 time record of 3:28.79. The fourth meet record came on the heels of New Britain’s Yendri Ruiz, defending champion in the 600m, with his speedy clocking of 1:21.20 that moved him to CT#3 this season and tied at #12 on the CT all time list. More Boys Highlights The Bloomfield boys used the field events to their advantage scoring 44 points, winning three of the events as Ethan Rowe and Jessie Singleton Jr. placed 1-2 in the high jump with Rowe at his PR of 6-8. Singleton followed with his winning leap of 22-2 in the long jump. The shot put produced 16 points as senior Khile Francis tossed a PR mark of 57-10 for the win followed by Mason Gray’s PR toss of 51-1 for third place. Javonni Reynolds and Shaun Lazenby took 2nd and 3rd in the 55m hurdles behind Johnson’s meet record as Reynolds clocked a PR of 7.58 for a CT #4. The Warhawks added key points as they scored in all relays paced by 3rd places in the 4x800m and 4x400m.

Girls Meet Highlights Meet Records The first record of the meet came from the Bloomfield 4x200m quartet of Jahniya Barclay, Saphyr Brown, Deanna Spears and D’Asia Duncan as they combined for a quick 1:42.94 to erase their old record of 1:43.54 set two years ago. Duncan returned in the finals of the 55m hurdles for the winning effort of CT#1 8:15 that reduced the former record of 8.45 by Kareema Mckenzie of Windsor. Also under the old mark were teammate Vanessa Agyemang (8.25), a CT #2 and Windsor’s Tomari Gillespie (8.29), CT#3. A Bloomfield athlete bettered another meet record as Saphyr Brown leaped 18-8.75 in the long jump that bettered Agyemang’s jump from last year by over 3 inches. Agyemang placed second by equalling her effort from last year. Teammate April Nathaniel made it a Warhawk sweep with her third place leap of 17-3.25. More Girls Highlights The Warhawks fueled their championship title defense with more victories across the events that included a win by Payton Sirdine in the shot put with a toss of 37-7 and their 1600m SMR team of Kiersten Golding, April Nathaniel, Soleigh Dixon, and D’Asia Duncan (her 3rd win of the meet). Another sprinter who had herself a golden day was Manchester’s Samiya Eady who blazed to convincing wins in both the 55m finals in 7.06 and the 300m finishing in 40.28. Eady was also part of her team’s 4x200m relay team that took third in 1:47.33, their season best. The top performer in the middle distance events was Hall’s Alexandra Golder who anchored her 4x800m teammates of Kyra Baun, Lucille Vargas and Claire Furia to a winning time of 9:55.02. Golder returned in the 600m to claim another gold medal in 1:39.39 over Windsor’s Evelyn Schwartz. The Titan returned to anchor her 4x400m teammates Kyra Baun, Lucille Vargas and Sarah Benner to a season best of 4:06.34 and a CT#2 this season. The two longest events were owned by Glastonbury’s sophomore sensation Lauren Parrett as she clocked her season best 5:01.29 in the 1600m and returned to win the 3200m in 11:18.42.
