The North Central Connecticut Conference conducted their Indoor Track & Field Championships on Tuesday night at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. The meet saw Ellington boys earn the team title over defending champion Rockville by a 135 to 120 margin while the girls’ championship was again won by Rockville by a comfortable 132-72 point margin over runner-up Coventry in the 12 team league.

Boys Championship Highlights

In chase for the team title Ellington earned points in all events except two while scoring more than half their points in 4 events while capturing the 4x800m and 4x400m relays. Victories also came for the Knights in the 55m hurdle finals from Dylan Calsetta (8.17), a PR of 10:00.55 from Alexander Bianchi in the 3200 and a leap of 6-0 by James Kessel that increased his personal best height.

The 2-3-4-5 sweep of points in the 600m was eclipsed with a winning time of 1:27.20 from defending champion Emmett Kristoff of Rockville. It was an impressive effort over the entire night since Kristoff won the previous 1000m in 2:37.17 and then returned in the 1600m SMR to anchor his team to a win in a season best of 3:48.83.

Rockville kept pace with the Knights as they scored wins in the 4x200m and in the 300m as Otavio Pinto finished in his PR of 36.62.

Girls Championship Highlights

The Rockville girls also relied on their depth in defending their title by scoring in 13 of the 15 events that included wins in both the 4x800m and 1600m SMR relays while placing second in the other 2 relays. Senior Melody Rowe-Cary earned the 55m title in her PR of 7.51 while teammate Aaliyah Tucker won the 55m hurdles in her PR of 9.34. Tucker also leaped 15-5 to win the long jump. The Rams received another first place from Jeanne Kasanba in the shot put with her PR of 32-4.

Coventry tried to keep pace but lacked the depth as they were fueled by wins in the pole vault by Caroline Elliott and their 4x200m of Taylor Franchere, Alexa Rouillard, Ava Halsted and Madison Tiberio who combined for a season best of 1:57.46.

Ellington girls were in the hunt for a title as well led by junior standout Jenna Luoma who won the high jump at 5-0, placed 3rd in the 600m and capped the evening with a win in the 4x400m relay with teammates Yana Karpenko, Karla Greenwood and Anyah Brown in 4:30.73.

It’s not too early to think about your plans for summer training that could include attending the Foss Running Camp!
