By Senior Correspondent Marty Ogden, Editing and Graphics by Ron Knapp The Berkshire League started hosting an indoor track and field championship last year and in the second edition on Friday night the Nonnewaug boys won their second straight title by defeating Thomaston by a score of 132-101 and Lakeview, in only their second year as a school, won its first conference girls’ title by holding off Thomaston 120-111 at the Track & Field Training Center at Bethel High School. Boys Championship Highlights Nonnewaug won by scoring in 12 of 15 events and winning four of them. PJ Galullo led the way for the Chiefs winning the 55m in 6.73, contributing a leg of the 4x200m (1:39.76) and taking second in the long jump with a leap of 19-0. Anthony Perez defended his title in the shot put, tossing a distance of 43-08. Their 4x400m put an exclamation mark on the evening by winning the final event of the night in 3:52.69. Thomaston’s Beau Kociszewski ruled the distance events. The Thomaston junior won the 1600m in 4:48.68 and the 3200m in 10:40.42. He also picked up a silver medal in the 1000m finishing in 2:44.86. Girls Championship Highlights Although the Lakeview girls only won two events they scored multiple athletes in four events to make up for the loss of star power. Their two gold medal performances came from Camila Salinas in the shot put and Greysen Thomas in the high jump. Shepaug Valley had a double winner of their own as Christianne Persson sped to the 55m title in 7.45 and then returned after a short break to take gold in the 55m hurdles in 8.60. Madeline Garguilo made the most of her championship experience winning a tough double in the 1000m in 3:12.59 and returning a short while later to win the 600m in a season best of 1:40.07. The winning efforts in both distance events were owned by Thomaston’s Briana Belanger as she won the 1600m in 5:30.21 and returned later to earn the 3200m title in 12:13.39. Belanger almost earned a third win as she finished second in the 600m. The Bears kept pace early in the meet with Lakeview with victories in the 4x200m and 4x800m relays as well as adding a winning effort in the long jump from Hannah Zuklie. It’s not too early to think about your plans for summer training that could include attending the Foss Running Camp!
