D1 MEET RESULTS

DII MEET RESULTS

Unlike most conferences that have a single conference meet, the Eastern Connecticut Conference splits their meet into a large and small school division that were held at the Coast Guard Academy’s 180m flat track on Saturday. The DI championships, which is a gathering of the six larger schools, was won by East Lyme boys who scored 134 points with Fitch taking 2nd with 119. The Viking girls made it a sweep and dominated the meet with 164 points with Woodstock Academy totalling 107.

On the boys side, the smaller school ten team meet was won by Stonington who narrowly defeated Ledyard 120-117. Montville dominated the girls competition earning 127 points with Ledyard once again claiming the runner-up spot with 84.

DI Boys Meet Highlights

State Open cross country champion Sam Leone led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1000m for East Lyme winning in 2:46.75 with Joey Papalia taking the runner-up spot less than a second behind and Nico Cardello only a tenth of a second behind in third.

Leone held off Fitch’s Julien Silva in the 1600m with the Viking taking his 2nd win of the evening with a time of 4:22.79. Jack Faitsch and Adrik Gates contributed ten more points with their 3rd and 4th place finish to give East Lyme 44 points in these two events.

Karthik Bolineni moved up from 17th last year to claim the title in the 55m in 6.73 and Topher Regan also won his first individual title for East Lyme winning the 600m in 1:26.78.

DI Girls Meet Highlights

Like the boys, East Lyme girls dominated the distance events but also added significant points in the field. The 4x800m easily won with a time of 10:15.28 and they took 2nd through 5th in the 1000m led by freshman Mia Cordes in 3:19.56 and her other teammate all coming across the line within feet of each other in 3:22.

Another freshman Olivia Ibrahim claimed the 1600m in 5:31.07 with three of her teammates scoring as well. Sophomore Kathryn Wren won the 3200m in 11:58.94 with her teammate Allison Caskey grabbing the runner-up spot in 12:48.31.

In the field, East Lyme swept the top three spots in the pole vault, led by Teagan Czaja who cleared at least 10 feet for the fourth time this winter.

Jillian Fant contributed big points in the other two jumping events. She won the long jump with a PR of 16-1 and took 2nd in the high jump for the 2nd year in a row with a clearance of 5-0.

Woodstock Academy’s Emma Weitknecht has been the queen of the ECC hurdles the past two years and defended her title in the 55m hurdles, running 8.67. Weitknecht’s teammate Avery Plouffe was 2nd at the Open last spring in the shot put and she defended her title with a distance of 38-8. The senior has been a model of consistency this season and hasn’t thrown less than 37 feet this winter with a best of 39-10.75.

Norwich Free Academy sophomore Amanda Muench in her first season of track won the high jump with a height of 5-2. This clearance moves her up to be tied at #4 in CT this winter.

Boys DII Meet Highlights

Stonington boys led by Max DeLaRosa swept all the sprinting events on Saturday. The senior was a double winner taking the 55m in 6.59 and the 300m in 36.46. His teammate Jaxon Camara was his understudy following him in 2nd place in both events. The Bears also claimed victory in the 4x180m relay and Garrett Cooper claimed the 55m hurdle title with a PR of 8.30, also won the high jump at 5-6 and took 3rd in the long jump with a distance of 18-2.5.

Brooks National Qualifier Tycen LaBelle easily defended his 1600m and 3200m titles taking the shorter event in 4:31.79 and the longer in 9:52.96. The Griswold junior has kept a low key profile this winter, running only his 3rd and 4th races as he prepares for the upcoming state, regional and national championships.

State leader in the shot put Liam Sweeney of Bacon Academy continues to dominate the competition as he defended his title with a distance of 56-0, only two and a half feet less than his best this season.

Girls DII Meet Highlights

Montville won their 3rd straight ECC DII title with a well balanced attack in the sprints and field. They may be hard pressed for a repeat next year as they graduate 11 seniors that combined to score 106.5 of their team’s 127 total points.

The biggest highlight of the day for the Wolves was when Kamryn Plikus cleared a school record of 11-4 in the pole vault to break her own school record and claim her 4th straight indoor crown. The senior also finished 2nd behind her teammate Hannah Suarez who won the high jump with a clearance of 4-10.

Senior Tiana Bamber defended her title in the 55m running a PR of 7.40. She also finished 2nd in the 300m for the second year in a row and was part of the winning 4x180m relay. The 55m hurdles has been another event that has been quite successful for Montville the past few years. Evelyn Granskog who was 4th last year became the third straight hurdler from her team to claim the conference title. She won with a season best of 9.74.

Ashlynn Audoin has been a three year scorer in the shot put and she repeated as champion in the event with a season best throw of 31-6.75.

Lyman Memorial’s Hazel Delucia was 3rd in the State Open last year and has rarely been defeated by any of her conference rivals over the past three years. She broke 11 minutes in the 3200m for the first time which not only broke the school and ECC meet record, but the overall conference record as well. Her winning time of 10:50.62 makes her the 2nd fastest girl in CT this winter and 16th fastest in CT history.

It’s not too early to think about your plans for summer training that could include attending the Foss Running Camp!
