The 38th New England Interscholastic Indoor Track & Field Championships have arrived and will take place at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston this Saturday with the first events to begin at 1:00pm with packet pick-up beginning at 11:30am. Let’s check out some of the top CT athletes who just might be competing for a medal.

First of all it must be noted that the order of events is different at New Englands than each state championship for the six states that send athletes. Massachusetts runs their relays at the end of the meet and their athletes might be fresher in the 4x200m and 4x800m that are held at the beginning of the program. Also at New Englands, the 55m and 55m hurdles are held on the infield before the events on the oval take place so that may allow the athletes in those events to not run the 4x200m before like they do here in CT. Remove the sprint medley relay and several CT 4x400m teams should become stronger. Also, Rhode Island allows athletes to compete in four events, so the races are often more tactical since many of the top athletes may not lay it on the line to run their best times; instead their focus might be on team points. This is a long way of saying, there should be plenty of surprises and more than any other meet anything can happen on Saturday.

Boys 55m Hurdles

Meet Record: Lucas Andrade  Brockton-MA 7.22 2025

This event should start the meet off with a bang. CT brings four of the top dozen hurdlers in state history and five of the top seven seeds. This could be a dominant event for the Nutmeg State. East Hartford’s Davian Johnson crushed the CT state record with his time of 7.22 last Saturday and he will once again be challenged by Rysaiah Saunders of Danbury who ran 7.32 to win Class LLs. The Bloomfield duo of Shaun Lazenby and Javonni Reynolds have both run 7.50 and 7.51 this winter and Windsor’s Haydn Spaulding ran 7.50 at Yale. Eight make the finals and we just might see a lot of familiar names in it if things go well.

Other CTQualifiers:

Dhonnivon Cosme, 7.75  Kennedy - seeded 17th

Boys 55m Dash

Meet Record: 6.33  Mark Doyley, Weaver-CT  2017

Woah! That State Open final was fast. Windsor’s Shelldon Simpson ran the 2nd fastest time ever at the Open with a New England leading time of 6.30. Ridgefield’s Kieran Boyle and Justus Richardson both ran PRs in the finals and have a great shot at making the finals on Saturday. Connecticut is so deep in this event that junior Adrian Vasquez of Bethel and Middletown sophomore Rodney Crockett have run times this season that are among the top ten times in the New England. While it’s highly unlikely there will be six CT athletes in the finals, they are certainly all among the best in the region. But all eyes will be on Simpson who could possibly break Mark Doyley’s meet record.

Boys 4x800m

Meet Record: 7:47.62  Ridgefield-CT 2024

One of the things that is cool about the 4x800m at New Englands is that Massachusetts runs their relay at the end of their state championships and the other states run on flat tracks which means many teams may run significantly faster. Brookline-MA is the only team to have gone under eight minutes but we could see several more including Greenwich and East Lyme who are seeded third and sixth. Brookline was third last year in an exciting finish with Ridgefield and Xavier and will be looking at moving up into the winner’s circle. But State Open champion Greenwich, who was 11th last year, is seeded only a couple of seconds behind them and will also contend for the win. If either CT team goes under eight minutes, it will be their first time in either school’s history and will put them among the top ten school records in CT history.

Other CT Qualifiers:

8:09.51 - Ellington - seeded 10th

8:10.05 - Xavier - seeded 11th

8:10.99 - EO Smith - seeded 14th

8:11.09 - Brien McMahon - seeded 15th

Boys 4x200m

Meet Record: 1:28.90 Xaverian Brothers-MA 2024

LaSalle Academy-RI is back to defend their title but it will be a tall order for the Rams. They have been a consistent Rhode Island and New England power going back nearly a century. Clinton-MA is the top seed from their third place finish at the MIAA Indoor Meet of Champions but unfortunately Boston College HS and Newton North, the top two finishers did not enter. Danbury and Hamden the top two teams at the State Open are seeded 6th and 8th and will most likely be in the 2nd fastest heat. If they can avoid the pitfalls of the 4x200m on an indoor track they should be able to run even faster on a banked track. If Danbury can get 55m school record holder Machai Henry healthy for Saturday, they just might be able to get down to their 1:30.30 they ran earlier in the season at Ocean Breeze with him in the line-up. The great thing about this relay is teams often come from the earlier heats and score, so you never know who is going to end up with a medal.

Other CT Qualiers:

1:31.99 - Shelton - seeded 12th

1:32.04 - Farmington - seeded 13th

1:32.16 - Southington - seeded 14th

1:32.72 - Xavier - seeded 17th

Boys Mile:

Meet Record: 4:11.93 Gavin Coombs, Griswold-CT 2004

Defending champion Sam Leone hasn’t quite been up to par the past few weeks. While he tripled to lead his East Lyme team to a Class M title he chose to only run the 4x800m at the State Open and did not run the 1600m. With all the other medalists having graduated the State Open champ Andrew Sharron of Darien is the top returner. Maine champion Henri Rivard is the top seed with his winning mile time of 4:19:06 but don’t overlook Brooks Mello of Barrington-RI who ran 4:18 during the holiday break but is only seeded fifth. Ellis Wood was right behind Rivard at the Maine state meet and also went under 4:20. Another entrant seeded pretty far back is Joel Thornton-Sherman of St Johnsbury-VT who won his state meet in 4:29 but has gone under 4:20 for the mile this month and comes from a family of runners who have been highly successful at New Englands. Ridgefield’s Aidan Nelson has been highly successful against college runners having run 4:14 and 1:53 for 800m. That success hasn’t transferred against his peers yet as he was 2nd at Class LL and 3rd at the Open in 4:21. But the Tiger certainly has the potential to win it all. Fitch’s Julien Silva went under 4:20 for the 1600m last spring and could also be in the front pack. One thing we know for sure is that there are a lot of people who have a legitimate shot at winning this event.

Other CT Qualifiers

Max Mocarski - 4:25.28 - Fairfield Warde - seeded 7th

Hayden Burke - 4:29.03 -Portland - seeded 12th

Caleb Davis - 4:30.33 - Simsbury - seeded 17th

Boys 1000m

Meet Record: 2:25.14 Said Ahmed, Boston English-MA 2001

Defending champion Alex Medina of Hamden returns with a much improved kick which makes him even more dangerous this year. He regularly goes under 60 seconds the last 400m of his races and has a best of 2:27.04 from the BU Terrier Classic against college runners. No other entrants have gone under 2:30 so that will give Medina even more confidence coming into his race. Emmett Kristoff of Rockville and New Canaan’s Ryan Monohan have both run 2:30 a couple of times with Monohan having a slightly faster PR but Kristoff coming out on top the three times they’ve met this winter. Brookline’s Harry Flint has also run 2:30 twice but he will most likely be coming back from the 4x800m where his team is the top seed. Robert Beato of Milton was 3rd in the MA MOC with a sub 2:32 seed and should be up front as well.

Other CT Qualifiers

Landon Rubano - 2:35.09 - Xavier - seeded 14th

Boden Paul - 2:37.11 - Bacon Academy - seeded 19th

Dyllan Asuncion - 2:37.39 - Stratford - seeded 22nd

Boys 600m

Meet Record: 1:18.31 Rodney Agyare-May, Burncoat, MA 2017

Last year Charles Dalles surprised everyone, including himself by winning the overall New England title from the 2nd fastest heat. The runner from Coginchaug ran 1:21.95 which was impressive but this year the top six entrants have seeds faster than that. The State Open crown came down to the final step of the race with New Britain’s Yendri Ruiz finishing in 1:20.67 with s Dalles only .08 seconds behind. The pair come into New Englands as the top seeds. Joseph Gustavson of Pinkerton Academy was the New Hampshire state champion is greatly improved since last year when he hadn’t even broken 1:30 for the 600m. The top two finishers from the MA MOC Nico Peukert, of Arlington-MA and Denzel Denzel Kisekka,of Lowell had a thrilling finish at their state championship finishing only .06 seconds apart. Brookfield’s Landon Wall has dropped time each time he has run the event this winter, ran his PR of 1:21.87 to finish 3rd in the State Open and will make the fast heat on Saturday.

Other CT Qualifiers

Mahkai Heyward - 1:23.34 Hillhouse - seeded 10th

Caiden D'Alessandro - 1:24.17  Bethel - seeded 16th

Ryan Newcomb - 1:24.93  Greenwich - seeded 18th

Boys 300m

Meet Record: 33.90  Maxim Copeland, Windsor-CT 2024

In 1993, Danbury’s Jason Newton ran 34.90 to become the first boy to go under 35 seconds at New Englands. That record lasted for over a dozen years and now that time won’t even make the fast heat. Shelldon Simpson finally reached his goal of breaking 34 seconds to win the State Open but it left him with more to achieve as he tied Maxim Copeland’s school record he set two years ago when he set the meet record. Copeland dropped over four tenths of a second from Floyd Little’s flat track to the banked track at Reggie Lewis. Can you imagine what Simpson might be able to run on Saturday? He will be pushed by two-time Rhode Island state champion Garrett Giroux-Pezzullo of LaSalle Academy, who is also on the verge of breaking 34 seconds with a lifetime best of 34.36. Never count out Lyman Hall’s Aaron Rich who always seems to get better with the competition. New Hampshire state champion Ross Stephens of Con-Val made the long trip down to Ocean Breeze this season where he ran a 34.12. Despite an injury, Cromwell’s Nassyr Andrade broke the Class S record (34.62) two weeks ago and came back to take 3rd at the State Open and is seeded fifth. Three others are seeded under 35 seconds so this could be the fastest and deepest field ever at New Englands.

Other CT Qualifiers

Brenan McCabe - 34.87 - Immaculate - seeded 8th

Lucas Nolte - 35.18 - Daniel Hand - seeded 12th

Kieran Boyle - 35.56 - Ridgefield - seeded 13th

Boys 2 mile

Meet Record: 8:51.59  Gavin Sherry, Conard-CT 2022

Sean Gray was undefeated across the region during cross country, winning the Rhode Island state championship, New Englands and Nike Cross Northeast Regionals. It took until Nike Cross Nationals for the Portsmouth senior to suffer his first defeat, crossing the line in 15th place. He will face off against the best of New Hampshire, Jason Robie of Pinkerton Academy and Bishop Guertin’s Ethan Fischer ran 8:34 and 8:36 for 3000m and should help push the pace. That leaves the top three Connecticut seeds having to go out harder and hopefully pop off personal records. Griswold’s Tycen LaBelle was State Open runner-up, third place at New Englands and a Brooks National qualifier in cross country. He’s raced relatively sparingly this winter but seems to be just getting going after his win last Saturday in a PR of 9:19.52. If the pack goes out faster, he just might be able to knock more time off his PR and move up from his 4th seed. Hudson Schunk didn’t even break 10 minutes for 3200m last indoor season but started dropping time during outdoor track and eventually got under 4:20 for the 1600m. The Fairfield Warde senior took the lead in the State Open late in the race last week, eventually taking 2nd place in 9:22.38 and is a serious medal threat. Oxford’s Joe DeLuise usually likes to get right to the front in his races but tucked in behind early leader Luke Cushing of Amity the early laps of the State Open. He’s run well at the State Open the past few seasons but is still looking for his first All New England medal. Cushing was third last spring at New Englands and is looking to get into that shape again.

Other CT Qualifiers

James Hayes - 9:33.45 - Greenwich - seeded 14th

Julien Silva - 9:34.61 - Fitch - seeded 15th

Boys 4x400m

Meet Record: 3:21.49  Brockton 2001

Three teams went under the State Open record at the State Open on Saturday and since athletes will be running on a banked track they will be looking to run even faster. Windsor popped off a 3:23.93 with Farmington finishing in an amazing 3:24.53 and Hamden crossing the line in 3:24.79. Bloomfield and Rockville are also scheduled to be in the fastest heat so you could potentially see a Connecticut sweep of the top five places. Brockton’s 25 year old meet record is certainly in play.

Other CT Qualifiers

3:28.88 - Danbury seeded 11th

Boys Long Jump

Meet Record: Michael Ahoua Torrington-CT 24-00.00 2025

Last year, Michael Ahoua became the first boy to jump 24 feet at New England's. But this fall three boys have already gone over that mark with Lyman Hall’s Aaron Rich leading the way with a CT state record of 24' 6.25". His biggest rivals are Amar Skeete of Catholic Memorial-MA and Jalen Moseley of LaSalle Academy-RI. The biggest advantage Rich has is that he has already exceeded 24 feet in seven meets this season. Ky'Nai Tracey of Oxford and Aaron Rich’s brother Ethan both had big PRs at the State Open, going over 23 feet. This could be another big event for CT athletes.

Other CT Qualifiers

Tobeas Kelly - 22' 4.25" - Danbury  - seeded 8th

Damarion Wilson - 22' 0.5" - Prince Tech - seeded 11th

Jessie Singleton Jr. - 22' 0.25" - Bloomfield - seeded 12th

Boys Shot Put

Meet Record: 67-11.50 Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan Woonsocket 2022

Last year three Connecticut boys finished in the top six at New Englands and the top seven were all seniors. Two of the top five returners, Khile Francis of Bloomfield and Liam Sweeney of Bacon Academy were returners. Both boys have two of the top five throws in New England this season and could make the finals. Don’t count out Sam Binkowski who made a three foot PR to finish in the runner-up spot at the State Open. If he can do that again, there could be three in the finals with a chance to earn a medal.

Other CT Qualifiers:

Mason Gray - 53' 2"  - Bloomfield - seeded 9th

Cameron Saunders - 51' 3.75" - Hamden - seeded 18th

Eli Manning - 49' 9.25" - Woodstock - seeded 20th

Boys High Jump

Meet Record: 7-00.25 Khalil Antoine, Hillhouse-CT 2024

There are four boys who have cleared 6-8 already this season but Ethan Rich has cleared the height six of his nine competitions with several very good attempts at 6-10. His brother Aaron has cleared it once, but is consistently over 6-6. Ethan Rowe of Bloomfield split the Lyman Hall brothers at the State Open and has cleared 6-8 once this season. Central Catholic-MA’s Carlos Quintana hasn’t cleared 6-8 since the middle of January but if lightning strikes again, he could be a contender for a winner’s plaque. Jesse Singleton of Bloomfield and Jalen Moseley of LaSalle Academy are also over 6-6 and could earn medals as well.

Other CT Qualifiers:

Braydon Shields - 6' 4” - Daniel Hand - seeded 12th

Brodie Scott - 6' 4" - Waterford - seeded 13th

It’s not too early to think about your plans for summer training that could include attending the Foss Running Camp!
