The 38th New England Interscholastic Indoor Track & Field Championships have arrived and will take place at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston this Saturday with the first events to begin at 1:00pm with packet pick-up beginning at 11:30am. Let’s check out some of the top CT athletes who just might be competing for a medal.

First of all it must be noted that the order of events is different at New Englands than each state championship for the six states that send athletes. Massachusetts runs their relays at the end of the meet and their athletes might be fresher in the 4x200m and 4x800m that are held at the beginning of the program. Also at New Englands, the 55m and 55m hurdles are held on the infield before the events on the oval take place so that may allow the athletes in those events to not run the 4x200m before like they do here in CT. Remove the sprint medley relay and several CT 4x400m teams should become stronger. Also, Rhode Island allows athletes to compete in four events, so the races are often more tactical since many of the top athletes may not lay it on the line to run their best times; instead their focus might be on team points. This is a long way of saying, there should be plenty of surprises and more than any other meet anything can happen on Saturday.

Girls 55 Dash

Meet Record: Lisa Raye 11 West Warwick-RI 6.79  2025

Since national record holder Lisa Raye graduated a year early and MA state champ Nina Kyei-Aboagye has decided to forego New Englands, this leaves the 55m wide open. Saphyr Brown of Bloomfield powered through to a dominating win at the State Open is the top seed with her time of 7.05. Thea Jackson of Mt. Hope has gone on a five meet winning streak in Rhode Island is the #2 seed. Sophomores Ella Barber of Greenwich and Kyra Mclean of Stratford are beginning to build their resumes and will look to make finals. Alex D'Amadio of King Phlip Regional-MA has greatly improved since last year and was 3rd at the MA state championships.

Other Connecticut Qualifiers:

Ann Sara Luma - 7.22 Brien McMahon - seeded 7th

Jaida Murray - 7.22 Windsor - seeded 8th

Cynthia Singleton - 7.30 Naugatuck - seeded 16th

Girls 55m Hurdles

Meet Record: Anika Scott, 12 Bedford-NH 7.76 2025

Gabby Rivera competed against one of the deepest fields in several years at the State Open 55m hurdles and came out on top running a PR of 8.06. But now the Brien McMahon senior will have to face Massachusetts state record holder Emmanuella Edozien of Natick who just re-broke her own record clocking 7.92. They will both face off against a pair of Bloomfield runners who helped lead them to another State Open team title. Despite an injured ankle D’Asia Duncan finished 2nd in 8.16; only .01 seconds off her PR. Vanessa Agyemang who was 4th last year at New Englands dropped her PR to 8.21 and is seeded 4th. Windsor’s Tomari Gillespie has a PR of 8.29 and has a great chance of making finals.

Other Connecticut Qualifiers:

Emma Weitknecht - 8.38 Woodstock Academy - seeded 10th

Layla Harris 8.41 Windsor - seeded 12th

Girls 4x800m

Meet Record:  9:00.29 Glastonbury-CT 2024 (A Paluska, A Gattinella, L Garbett, B Strauss)

Exeter just broke New Hampshire’s state record at their Division I Championships at the beginning of February, running 9:15.39. The team was 4th last winter at New Englands but came out on top and won the New England championship in outdoor track. MA champion Billerica Memorial ran a season best of 9:18.52 at the MSTCA Kalperis Relays in January. Franklin pushed Billerica at the MA Meet of Champions and comes into the meet as the third seed. New Canaan stacked their relay for the State Open and took home the title and will face Rhode Island champion North Kingston, the defending New England champion. Glastonbury, who set the meet record two years ago, comes in as the 6th seed. But don’t overlook Weston. They only finished 6th at the State Open, but can add in 7th place State Open 1000m finisher Abigail Winslow who could drop their time into the medal range. Greenwich, who had won the Class LL title on the strength of their middle distance depth that they placed in individual events, could put them together and shock many people.

Other Connecticut Qualifiers:

9:47.59 - Trumbull - seeded 8th

9:50.53  - Windsor - seeded 13th

Girls 4x200m

Meet Record: 1:41.47  Danbury-CT 2010 (T Green, N Lowry, M Walton, C Green)

The Connecticut State Open was fast! To put it in perspective, despite running on a flat track, the top three teams finished with three of the top four times in New England for the entire season. Bloomfield, Manchester and Windsor swept the top three spots last year and Hamden was 5th, earning All New England with all four teams returning. The WarHawk seed time of 1:42.33 is within range of Danbury’s 16-year old meet record of 1:41.47. Naugatuck and Greenwich are also seeded in the top six and if the sticks make it around the track without any issues this could be the most successful event for Connecticut athletes. Even though the top three MA teams didn’t enter the meet, the fastest team from the Bay State only had the 6th fastest time in New England this season and the top six probably wouldn’t have changed.

Girls 1-mile

Meet Record: Chase Gilbert,  11 Lyme-Old Lyme-CT 4:48.45 2025

Chase Gilbert broke the Connecticut state and New England meet record last year and returns with high expectations. The senior from Lyme Old Lyme has already run 4:47.96 for the mile this season but was disappointed with her State Open race where she went out on record pace, but ended up finishing in 4:55.13 for 1600m. While no one else is seeded under 5 minutes, Gilbert is used to taking a race out herself and running fast on her own. North Haven’s Ava Tarasuk came from way back in the first half of the Open and ran a 71 second last 400m to move into 3rd place, setting a nine second PR of 5:05.06. If she can duplicate that performance, the Night Hawk could earn her first New England medal. After earning All New England in cross country as a freshman, Harper Shirley of Manchester is back in form and comes in seeded 5th. Maine’s Laura Driscoll of Scarborough-MA was 6th last year and comes in as the 2nd seed.

Other Connecticut Qualifiers:

Maya Donzella - 5:11.77  Windsor - seeded 14th

Katie McMorrow - 5:12.34  New Fairfield - seeded 16th

Cora Wasiolek - 5:13.50  Mercy - seeded 17th

Girls 1000m

Meet Record: 2:46.05 Brooke Strauss, Glastonbury-CT 2025

Last year Sarah Roberts raced the 600m and 3200m and earned All New England honors in the 2-mile. This year, the Mercy senior has settled into what she feels is her strongest event, the 1000m where she won the first State Open title for her school and comes in as the top seed. She will face New Hampshire champion Mikita Barry of Bedford High School who was 2nd last year behind Brooke Strauss in a PR of 2:50.53. Last year’s 5th place finisher Alexandra Morgan of Fairfield Warde returns and is seeded 6th. South Windsor’s Sofia Holovatska was All New England in cross country and will be looking for her second New England medal.

Other Connecticut Qualifiers:

Kaitlyn Kumpf - 3:00.62 Wheeler - seeded 8th

Molly Musselman - 3:01.29 Stonington - seeded 10th

Rebecca Langlais - 3:02.23 Tolland - seeded 13th

Girls 600m

Meet Record: 1:30.79  Precious Holmes, Hillhouse-CT 2012

Connecticut has done quite well in the 600m the past few years with Gabby Hernandez winning two titles and Naugatuck’s Lauren Kropo claiming last year’s crown. Now a senior, Kropo is looking to defend her title but will match up against Penny Blumenthal of Newton North-MA who just started running the event in the middle of the season her senior year. The lacrosse star will be looking to break her school record of 1:33.06 but Kropo will be looking to break her PR of 1:32.30. This should be a great match up with RI champion Skyler Maxwell of Moses Brown also looking to go under 1:33. Hall’s Alexandra Golden, in her first season of indoor track, set a big PR of 1:35.05 to finish 2nd at the Open. She could run even faster Saturday since she won’t have run a leg of the 4x800m. Keep and eye out for Canton sophomore Kayla Berning who was a surprise 3rd place finisher at the Open. Unless there are scratches, she will be in the 2nd fastest heat and if she can win that, there is a chance she could earn a medal as well.

Other Connecticut Qualifiers:

Deanna Moore - 1:37.11 Hillhouse - seeded 8th

Camilla Murphy - 1:37.79 Sacred Heart Academy - seeded 9th

Gemma Hardwick 1:37.81 Greenwich - seeded 10th

Girls 300m

Meet Record: Lisa Raye 11 West Warwick-RI 37.76 2025

Chloe Elder is the only medalist returning from last year’s New Englands. The Natick-MA senior is coming fresh into this event after winning the MA Meet of Champion 600m title and will be looking at improving upon her 38.67 PR. Manchester’s Samiya Eady, the State Open champion, will get pulled along and is looking to get under the 40 second barrier. Don’t underestimate Vermont state champion Brinlee Gilfillan who’s PR of 40.23 comes on the University of Vermont’s 10-lap to the mile flat track. You know the Colchester senior can definitely run faster at Reggie Lewis’ 200m banked track. Windsor’s Paige Wilson was State Open champion and 3rd at New Englands last spring in the 400m and should also get faster on a banked track as well with a chance to score.

Other Connecticut Qualifiers:

Amaira Traynham - 40.84 - Wilbur Cross - seeded 10th

Ann Sara Luma - 41.24 - Brien McMahon - seeded 15th

Deanna Moore - 41.34 - Hillhouse - seeded 18th

Semaj Grier - 42.11 - Bloomfield - seeded 24th

Girls 2-miles

Meet Record: 10:09.20 Jacqueline Gaughan, Exeter-NH 2018

Unfortunately, the top six 6 Mass girls did not register for New Englands in the 2-miles and according to the seeds it looks like it could be a CT sweep. But if you look closer, 8th seeded Alexis Paterna of Exeter-NH has run a 10:26.54 2-mile at the MSTCA Northeast Invitational and is a 4:44 miler. Then you have VT state champ, Zoey McNabb. She came out for Champlain Valley Union’s New England championship cross country team as a senior and was their top runner at Nike Cross Nationals where they finished 15th. She has broken 10 minutes for the 3000m and has run a 5 minute mile. They should give State Open champion Lauren Parrett of Glastonbury plenty of company and help her get under 10:40. Of course Greenwich’s Sophie Passalacqua will be there as always. The Greenwich sophomore always seems to be right on Parrett’s slip stream and could turn the tables on her in any race. Behind them comes an onslaught of Connecticut distance runners all looking to break 11 minutes. Daniel Hand’s Anna Vlieks likes to come from behind so never count her out and Lyman Memorial’s Hazel DeLucia and Sarah Bogdan of Staples could both go under 10:50 for the 2-mile distance. Farmington senior Cameron Mooney earned her first trip to New Englands with a 30 second PR at the State Open and has an outside shot at scoring as well.

Girls 4x400m

Meet Record: 3:53.27  Wellesley-MA 2018

Breaking 4 minutes indoors in the girls 4x400m is the mark of a truly talented team and few teams are able to achieve it. No one in New England has been able to break the barrier yet this season, but with the best teams all gathering together on a fast track, we just might see it happen. MA champion Central Catholic just missed by .11 seconds and will be looking at taking another crack at it. With no sprint medley relay, Greenwich can go fresh(er) into the relay and hope to knock off the 2.5 seconds it will take. Joel Barlow will try to get under Weston’s all-time SWC record of 4:00.84 set in 2020. New Hampshire’s DI champion Nashua North is the 4th seeded team and defending New England champions Amherst Pelham was 3rd in the MA MOC and will be part of the mix. You can’t ever count out Windsor who always has a strong sprint core and comes in seeded 6th.

Other Connecticut Qualifiers:

4:09.57 - Shelton - seeded  10th

4:09.65 - Guilford - seeded 11th

4:10.33 - Fairfield Ludlowe - seeded 12th

Girls Long Jump

Meet Record: 20-06 Kate Hall, Lake Region-ME 2015

Top seeded Vanessa Agyemang of Bloomfield, who rallied to win the State Open where she leaped a season best of 18-11, will need to have her A-game against second seeded Thea Jackson of Mt Hope-RI who enters with a mark of 18-8.75 but has a season best of 18-10.5 from a few weeks ago. Bloomfield teammate Saphyr Brown is 3rd seed, also at her season best of 18-8.75, is the most consistent at 18-8 or better her last 5 meets. The third threat to medal from Bloomfield is April Nathaniel who enters as 5th seed at 18-3.5 that was her personal best.

Other Connecticut Qualifiers:

Mijonia Hart - 17' 8.5" - Naugatuck - seeded 12th

Nyasia Taylor - 17' 6.25" - Hillhouse - seeded 21st

Frieda Patzner - 17' 3.5" - Fairfield Ludlowe - seeded 24th

Girls Shot Put

Meet Record: 53-02.75 Laura Gerraughty, Nashua 2001

With only one competitor from last year’s senior laden medalists returning, the challenge for number 2 seed Avery Plouffe of Woodstock Academy will be to see if she can continue her rise to the top of the podium. The Open champion tossed a personal best of 41-4.25 to win last Saturday but she will need to do more to overcome top seeded Tayla Schneider of North Kingston-RI with her seed mark of 42-2.25 that is a foot less than her personal best from the end of January. There are several other contenders entering the ring on Saturday with seeds over 39 feet so 10th seed Payton Sirdine of Bloomfield will need to find her form from last season where she had a best toss over 40 feet to earn a podium place.

Other Connecticut Qualifiers:

Alexandria McWatters - 38' 4" - Foran - seeded 11th

Theresa Knuth - 38' 3.75" - Greenwich seeded 12th

Alexandra Lockwood - 38' 2.5" - Fairfield Ludlow - seeded 13th

Sara Fares - 38' 2.25" - Southington - seeded 14th

High Jump

Meet Record: 5-10 1994 Heather Francis, Dartmouth-NH CoMeetRecord: 5-10 1994, Nyagoa Bayak, Westbrook HS-ME 2018

Defending champion Ella Palisano of Mt Anthony Union-VT returns as the top seed with a height of 5-9.25 from the VT Championships in early January. Several contenders who enter with seed marks of 5-6 will be waiting for an opening to gain the podium as will several more seeded at 5-4. Connecticut’s hopes rest on the performances of the top 3 from the Open, champion Jenna Luoma of Ellington, Bloomfield’s Soleigh Dixon and Frieda Patzner of Fairfield Ludlowe. All enter with their 5-2 seeds with Patzner’s best this year at 5-5 and Dixon’s at 5-4.

Other Connecticut Qualifiers:

Olivia Wellen - 5' 2" - Fairfield Ludlowe - seeded 14th

Greysen Thomas - 5' 2" - Lakeview - seeded 26th

Madelyn Scarfo - 5' 0" - Mercy - seeded 33rd

It’s not too early to think about your plans for summer training that could include attending the Foss Running Camp!
