Hope arrived Thursday for the UNCW track & field program. The four running teams set for elimination after this school year will get the chance to change their fate.

In an abrupt change of course, the university announced fundraising benchmarks necessary to save the teams, at least for the short term.

Through a combination of individual donations and private fundraising, at least $250,000 must be raised by May 31 to continue men's cross country and track & field and women's indoor and outdoor track & field in 2015-2016. A letter from interim Chancellor William Sederburg to Roy Love, who heads the Save UNCW Track fundraising group, also states that at least $800,000 for facility renovations must be raised by Feb. 1, 2016.

The donations will be collected at UNCW.edu/supporttrackandfield.

We ought to help this program! Repost and help the fundraising by contributing. Athletic programs should not be shut down in Higher Education institutions!
