Coach Jeff Sommer
And I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from now on: Yes, said the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them.

Revelations 14:13

Coach Jeff Sommer from Estero was truly one of the good guys.  Passionate.  Caring.  A coach I admired and always took pleasure seeing on the course or on the track.   I knew him from the numerous times over the years that we conducted interviews one on one or through the many requests that he never hesitated to grant to talk to his athletes.  Coach made me feel special at the events we attended together.  He understood we shared a mutual passion for the sport and that hard work deserves recognition in a form that we could offer.

Many times over the years, it became obvious that he cared deeply about his teams.  His "One Team, One Family" mantra was evident over and over again.  He was a man who I believe loved the grit, determination, discipline, drive and virtues of being the best that you could be.  What made him a greater man was his other side.  The soul of being of a coach.

His external family net is cast far and wide with numerous lives touched by the embodiment of his work and passion.  He decided he could make a bigger difference with high school kids and never left for the allure of coaching in the college ranks.  He wanted his kids, and that included everyone in the community, to learn how to deal with adversity, to challenge themselves and to grow as human beings into young adults and leaders of the future.  Over his decades of mentoring, leading, and trusting, the passion and caring shined bright for all to see.

Coach Sommer's passing on Saturday shocked many of us as we can never know, why now, why him?  We have to trust there is a heavenly reason and remember the joy he brought to so many of us over the years and that we were lucky enough to have known him.
