New York Region Boys Early Season Rankings 2025Published by
North Rockland's Ryan Tuohy And Claudel Chery Are New York's Best 1-2 Punch By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Boys NXR New York Preview Seniors Ryan Touhy and Claudel Chery are two of the best runners in New York state this fall and the fact that they are teammates makes North Rockland a clear choice for No. 1 in the Empire State. Tuohy, the younger brother of three-time Nike Cross Nationals champion Katelyn Tuohy and 2025 NCAA qualifier Patrick Tuohy, continues the family's wide-ranging legacy at North Rockland. Ryan opened his season on Friday with an impressive win at the Red Raider Run, clocking 15:48 at Bear Mountain State Park. Chery, who finished second at the New York state meet in the 1,600 meters last spring, was second in 16:09. North Rockland could prove to be relevant nationally, something that has eluded New York boys teams in recent years. The past two years, New York's automatic qualifers placed 20th and 22nd at NXN both times. In 2022, Corning-Painted Post managed to finish 10th with St. Anthony's last. There is little data to go in New York so far as the competitive season just cracked open this weekend. Chaminade and Fairport are the next teams on the list, primarily because they bring back every significant runner from last year. Saratoga Springs is building around Thomas Isenovski, one of the top runners in the state, and Ward Melville has a good nucleus back from 2024 to work with. The regional champion, junior Ryan Sykes of Horace Greeley, is the defending Class A cross country champion and was the state runner-up in the 3,200 meters last spring (8:55.76). Senior Benjamin Berman of Bronx Science and senior Owen Conley from Colonie, the Class A runner-up last fall, are some of the top individuals to watch. 1. North Rockland. Seniors Ryan Tuohy and Claudel Chery led the Raiders to a fourth place finish last year at the NYS Federation Championships at NXR. Chery followed up witn an outstanding spring campaign and ran PRs of 4:12/9;01. Tuohy led the team to its first victory of the season on Friday at the Red Raider Run, beating Chery by 20 seconds. Behind them, the lineup is improved. Junior James McCarron, senior Trevor Piccone and junior Emmanuel Perez Nieves complete the best lineup in the state. 2. Chaminade. The Flyers of the CHSAA opened the season on Saturday by wnning the Warwick Valley Wave Mania. Chaminade was 15th at the NYS Federation Championships at NXR but brings everyone back, which is why expectations have risen. The team placed second to Xavier last year in the CHSAA and Xavier went on to represent New York at Nike Cross Nationals (abeit 22nd place). There are no standouts but a tight pack that includes seniors Brian Guiheen, Sean Loggie, Daniel Hilton and Daniel Egan, and junior Blake Weaver. 3. Fairport. It may seem a stretch that a team that finished 24th at last year's NYS Federation Championships at NXR could open the next season in the top three, but the Red Raiders weren't at full strength in that meet and the team welcomes back nearly everybody in the program. With more time to grow and bond, Fairport could be ready to strike this season. Seniors Jackson Hickey, Andrew Green, Ethan Leombrone and Henry Hill, junor Jacob Pacer and sophomore Tobin Ruder have an opportunity to compete for an automatic NXN berth. 4. Saratoga Springs. Thomas Isenovski finished second in last year's NYS Federation Championships at NXR and helped his team to an eighth place finish in the team standings. There is not a lot of depth coming back, but senior Joshua Nix is an important building block and developing junior class that includes Julian Gargano, Grahm Burns and Lucas Miller. Sophomore Thomas Kirchherr could aldo take big step forward this fall. 5. Ward Melville. The Patriots have four of the six who contributed to a seventh place finish at the NYS Federation Championships at NXR are back. Senior Anthony Anatol is the team's top senior, along with Luke Jantzen. Juniors Andrew Senf, Matteo Ritieni and Ty Buonomo and sophomore Ryan Corey have a reasonable chance to move up in the team rankings this fall. WATCHLIST More news |
