Lisa Raye, a sophomore at West Warwick High and Rhode Island state record holder in the 100- and 200-meter events as well as a state champion in the 100, 200, 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles and winner of the New England Championships in the 100, 200 and 4x100-meter relay, joins DyeStat.com editor Erik Boal to discuss competing June 14-16 at New Balance Nationals Outdoor at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Raye prevailed in both the freshman 100 and 200 races last year at the meet by clocking 11.64 and 23.58 seconds, respectively, in the finals. She has run a wind-legal 11.37 and 23.26 this spring, in addition to a wind-aided 22.73 in the 200 at the June 1 state championship, which is the fastest all-conditions high school mark in the country this season. Lisa and her sister Xenia Raye, a junior, teamed with Jailynn Huffman and Tatianna Baldinelli, to help West Warwick win the 4x100 relay crown in 47.47 on June 8 at the New England Championships. Xenia Raye also triumphed in the 400 at both the state final and New England Championships, clocking a personal-best 54.73 to capture the state title. Both sisters also produced sub-7 performances in the 55-meter dash during the winter indoor season, in addition to Lisa running 7.31 in the 60-meter dash, 23.53 in the indoor 200, 38.74 in the indoor 300, 8.25 in the 55 hurdles, 9.01 in the 60 hurdles and achieving an 18-8.75 (5.71m) leap in the long jump. She also expresses gratitude for the support of her family, especially her father Lionel, and how meaningful it has been to share the experiences with Xenia, including West Warwick prevailing by a 76-59 margin against Cranston West to win the girls state team championship. Lisa also examines how beneficial it has beneficial it has been to compete at elite events like New Balance Nationals Outdoor, Millrose Games, Nike Indoor Nationals and the USATF Junior Olympic National Championships and challenging herself against other top prep sprinters throughout the country. She also speaks about her opportunities to work with the Special Olympics in Rhode Island and how impactful contributing her time at those events has been for her and how inspiring interacting with the athletes has also been this year, in addition to how important the balance of volunteering in her community and excelling in the classroom are, along with her dedication and commitment to being successful on the track.
