Armory Sets Key Dates for 2016 Indoor SeasonPublished by
Updated 7/8/2015 NEW YORK, March 19, 2015 – Armory Foundation President Dr. Norbert Sander, professional athlete director Ray Flynn and college athlete director Jack Pfeifer announced today the Armory Track Invitational (ATI) featured section will be held on February 6, 2016 followed by the 109th NYRR Millrose Games on February 20, 2016. The back-to-back national indoor meets at The Armory New Balance Track & Field Center will ignite a blockbuster 2016 track & field schedule. “Both events will play a significant role in the Olympic year and all point to the World Championships on March 18-20 for the very first time in Portland, Oregon,” Dr. Sander said. "All roads will pass through New York City and onto Portland toward Rio 2016. Next year is going to be a memorable track & field season.” The 2016 Summer Olympics will take place in Rio de Janeiro on August 5-21. This year’s ATI and NYRR Millrose Games were both televised live nationally by NBC Sports Network and were part of the 2015 indoor USATF Championship Series. The ATI features some of the country’s finest professional, collegiate and high school athletes and replaced the former Collegiate Invitational. The ATI is made up of more than 40 collegiate teams and hundreds of high school competitors. The NYRR Millrose Games is the most recognized indoor meet and showcases track & field’s brightest stars. In January, OlympianMatthew Centrowitz (3:51.35) captured his second NYRR Wanamaker Mile by edging New Zealand’s 2008 Olympic silver medalist Nick Willis (3:51.46). In the same race 10 of the 12 men runners turned in sub-4 minute mile performances, including eight-time winner Bernard Lagat (3:54.91) who established a Masters World Record in the mile, and Chris O’Hare (3:55.35) who became the 100th person to post a sub-4 minute mile at The Armory. A New York City sports staple, the meet moved to the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory in Washington Heights in 2012 after having called Madison Square Garden home from 1914 to 2011. The Games – established by employees of Wanamaker’s Department Store – feature track and field’s most prolific male and female stars as well as collegiate, high school, club and youth competitors. More than 200 athletes share the distinction of being both Millrose and Olympic champions. In November of 2013, the New York Road Runners became the title sponsor of the NYRR Millrose Games, which is hosted by the Armory Foundation. More news |
