Cain shines again with World Jr 1,000 record
By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Mary Cain added another laurel on Thursday in Boston, running 2:39.28 for 1,000 meters indoors at the Boston University Multi-team meet. That broke a 31-year-old American and World Junior record (19-and-under) and it's the fastest for a U.S. girl still attending high school. The unprecedented nature of a high school athlete turning pro before graduation has caused some debate about whether she qualifies for a high school record under the criteria used by Track and Field News. Regardless, it's further proof that Cain is still progressing through the ranks of U.S. middle distance women. She edged her Nike Oregon Project teammate Treniere Moser at the finish line to pick up the win. In the race that followed, Oregon Project veteran Galen Rupp sliced nearly six seconds off the American record in the 5,000 meters with a very fast 13:01.26. |
