Johnny Gregorek's Big Run in Boston Makes Him and His Father the Fastest Father-Son Duo in HistoryBy Adam Kopet, DyeStat Editor The mile race at the Boston University Last Chance meet Sunday came with heavy hype, but it delivered. Oregon senior Edward Cheserek broke collegiate and Kenyan records with his win. Kyle Merber finished a strong second, continuing his fantastic season. Finishing in third was Johnny Gregorek. His time of 3:53.15 places him third in the world this year. But more, it makes him and his father, John Gregorek, the fastest father-son mile duo in history, according to Bring Back the Mile. John Gregorek first broke four minutes in 1981. He went on to run 3:51.34. Johnny Gregorek broke four minutes for the first time two years ago. His previous best of 3:55.34 was set last year in Raleigh, N.C. Their average mile time is 3:52.25. Bring Back the Mile tracks all of the father-son sub-four milers. To date, there have been nine pairs of fathers and sons who, in their careers, have broken four minutes. Kip Keino and son Martin Keino were the first to do it. The pair's best miles average to 3:52.72, ranking them second. Before Sunday, the Gregoreks were the third-fastest duo, behind Matt and Matthew Centrowitz. More news |
