Fast Sprints and Middle Distance Performances Earn This Week's Performance of the Week Awards

Track and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection.

Readers’ Choice: Tamari Davis

With 46.26 percent of the vote, Tamari Davis won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating Edward Cheserek with his second-place tally of 32.92 percent.

The ninth-grader from Gainesville FL broke two freshman class national records at the Dunamis Sports Group Indoor Super Meet while competing for Empire Athletics club.

Davis started her weekend by breaking the 200-meter class record in the prelims, running 23.54. That broke the 2007 record of Ashton Purvis by 0.01 seconds.

Not done with her weekend, Davis broke two more records the following day. She ran 7.30 in the prelims of the 60 meters, breaking the two-year-old freshman class record of 7.37 by Thelma Davies.

Editors’ Choice: Edward Cheserek

It was an impressive weekend in Boston for Edward Cheserek. The first-year pro started with a mile run Friday that saw him rocket up the all-time indoor list. Running at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University, Cheserek ran 3:49.44 to become the #2 all-time indoor mile performer and the fastest miler on U.S. soil.

That by itself would be enough for Cheserek to earn this week's award. However, he was not done yet. His racing weekend continued Saturday at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix where he took on some of the world's best in the 3,000 meters.

Cheserek faced off against world leader Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia, who ran 7:37.91 the week before in Germany.

Just after the gun, Cheserek found himself a step behind the pacemaker, but after just a couple of laps, he gave up the lead to Gebrhiwet. But then Gebrhiwet let the pace lag, allowing Adel Mechaal to jump to the front and build a sizable lead.

With 550 meters to go, Cheserek made his move, passing Gebrhiwet and closing down on Mechaal. Cheserek led the final 400 meters, with Gebrhiwet initially chasing on his heels. However, the final 200-meter lap was all Cheserek as he pulled away from the field to win in 7:38.74. He won by three seconds over Gebrhiwet.
