2011 World Championships Preview: Men's Hammer ThrowPublished by
The IAAF World Championships are set to being on Saturday and the men's hammer throw will be one of the first events. CollegeHammer.com's editor Martin Bingisser previews the competition on his personal site and provides a detailed look at all of the contenders. With the top ten qualifiers all within two meters (6.5 feet) of each other, the competition is wide open. In addition, there will be one collegiate competitor: Virginia Tech's Marcel Lomnicky, the 2009 NCAA Champion (also 2nd in 2011, 3rd in 2010). Lomnicky will be representing Slovakia.
Former collegians competing will be: NCAA Division II champion and record holder Kibwe Johnson (USA/Ashland '08), Michael Mai (USA/Army '00), former NCAA champions Libor Charfreitag (Slovakia/SMU '02) and Andras Haklits (Croatia/Georgia '02), and former runner-up Mattias Jons (Sweden/Boise State '06).
